Null Reference Exception Unhandled

I am getting the above error from the following code

fileWriter.WriteLine( _
record.strFirstName & "," & record.strLastName & "," & _
record.strStudentId & "," & record.strCourseName & "," & _
record.strGrade)

I am not exactly sure why.
