    Are these graphics playable ?

    http://survivingthewinds.cjb.net

    goto bottom of page. They are funny and very crappy graphics but im not too good in the graphics department. If you think you could do a better job than you can help me if you want.

    I am try to make a RPG in vb. The engine is very nice but the graphics arent as you can see. So can you tell me if you think you could play a game with those kinds of graphics ?

    Well, on a scale of 1-10 those pictures are......

    Diabolical!

    You seriously need to get someone with a bit of talent to draw them!!!!

    On the other hand, full marks for trying to write anything in VB! Should you need any help, ask here - there are plenty of people with the skills to solve any problems.

    I too am trying to write a full game in VB - but I have the advantage of having a graphic artist.

    well I always have problems when it comes to graphics myself, but it really is no big deal getting better than this. Why don't you just learn a little about graphics? If you can get some version of photoshop that would be great but paintshop and many others do it too. (I propose old photoshop versions that you could get cheap somewhere, who needs all those new features (well they are nice but not everyone has just a couple of 1000$ to spend on some graphics program))
    There are lots of tutorials all over the net that will actually get you pretty far...

    If you tell me what type of graphics you need, 3D, bitmap, sprite, inbattle, mapworld, then i can send you some samples and see what you think.

    k

    The characters have to be in bmp form and be 32x32 pixels. What they look like is up to you. The map needs to be in bmp form and 3600x3200 pixel. The map needs to include walk ways and dirt spot for npcs and the rest is up to you.

    I have played it. Good choice of basis. Do you want top-down 2d, or isometric like in Diablo 2 or Fallout Tactics?

    Its up to you. isometric would like nice but it all up to you because 2d-down would work too.

    do you want a current version to see how the engine works ?

    the download like is on the homepage!
    tell me if the game has any bugs too, thx!

    controls:

    *you might need to click the mouse to move.

    up/down/right/left = move around
    s = stats
    i = inventory

    npcs sell stuff and you can buy everything they sell so far and it goes into you inventory. Waypoint works two but other part not finished. It is still only 1% done so its not the best.

    hey!
    If I am not mistaken you are planning on using a large bitmap as map. This may work for you but I recommend using a tile engine. Tile engines are very simple to program (depending on how much additions like slopes and stuff you are going to have).
    Some good example on setting up tile engines plus all the explanations you could need for it can be found on www.ur.co.nz

    i know

    the next i do in the game is the map/tiling part. I just wanted to get a quick bmp up just so i could start programing the engine. What method would be good for tiling ( paintpicture) ?

    go for DirectX... If you do not want to start DX yet go for BitBlt but than again if you want to do something a little bigger DirectX is the way to go.

    can all be found on the page I told you off....
    but if you get tiling with bitblt you know how to do it in DX too, since it's exactly the same only you change the line that does the blitting....
    bitBlt BackBuffer.hdc,.....
    becomes something like
    BackBuffer.BltFast ....
    pretty much the same.
    Go for DirectX7 though!
