    Jabber Anyone?

    Anyone use Jabber?

I honestly hadn't realized what it was (beyond chat) until someone submitted a book review to Slashdot. Now I'm wondering if I can use this. I was thinking of making a distributed application that would need to talk from one "node" to another over the internet. I was dreading how I was going to mess with that.

Can I use Jabber as a free, open middleware?

Jabber is an Open Instant Messaging Standard based on XML.

If you want to program distributed applications, XML is an OPen Medium. I think Jabber is best suited for what it is that is pass messages. It does not (as I believe) connects distributed applications. Distributed application programming is best managed by the Java and the .NET platform.

As we speak, there are jabber implementations for Java already and a .NET implementation is under development ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/jabber-net )

.NET is not a viable alternative. Does Java have a solution?

In the past I've thought of using MQ/Series. It isn't free, but it is very nice, and there are APIs (MQIs) for several, portable languages.

I want some way for the nodes to talk, something that is connectionless, asynchronous, and standard. And I don't want to have to deal with the protocols directly.

What I want is free, simple middleware.

I'd love to answer, but gentlemens' protocol forbids such indiscretion

Amen. Grape ape was much cooler.

Thank you, by the way for acknowledging the Jabberjaw
comment, I was beginning to have flashbacks of when I was
trapped in that empty petroleum tank and I would yell and
yell but nobody could hear me.
    Merry Christmas
