Graphics Cards...
How do I tell what type of card the PC has?
As in is it a PCI card or not?
I have a feeling it's not - the slot structure is different from cards I KNOW are PCI - but I don't know squat diddly, so I'm really not sure...

PCI slots are usually white, and an AGP slot is usually brownish and set further back from the edge of the mobo.

Ta. I just read something about the differences, and I think I got it sorted now.
Me computer should have both slots right? AGP cards are just a better option, as they connect to a faster BUS, yada yada yada...

some computers don't have AGP slots, AGP stands for Advanced Graphics Port (i am pretty sure anyways, i never was very good at remembering those kinda thinks) anyways they let you stick video cards and such into your computer. you may not have them though (my brothers computer doesn't cause it has integrated video)

Check inside.
You have a Pentium II, I think, and some P2s had them, some didn't.
AGP cards are a better option and more widely available.

Based on filburt's description, and the obvious difference I can see in this card slot and the ones I know are PCI, I am pretty sure this is an AGP card. Either way, I appear to have both, so I think I'll get a replacement AGP one...
Cheers all.

Are you into gaming at all or do you plan on it?
If not, get any AGP card, preferably a Matrox, as they have very good 2-D quality. If you are, reply and tell us that and we'll help ya pick a good card

I don't have too much time for games these days...
At most, I reckon I'd play QuakeII on that machine or something like that. But supreme quality isn't important really - can't afford anything too classy...
I'm looking at this:
VC-TNT2-32M 32M TNT2 M64 AGP VGA CARD $70
I have no idea what it is - it's an OEM brand, but it's the cheapest 32M card in the shop (www.cwsydney.com.au), so I guess it'll do...

Well It's not a gaming card but it'll run Quake 2 fine I'm sure...and it'll be OK
If you like working with videos or other 2-D stuff I recommend Matrox though
So yeah that'll be fine

Cool. I'm gonna have one more slash at formatting/reinstalling Win98, and see what happens first though.
Cheerio.

Just general FYI....was reading an articule from APC the other day that was stating a 128mg video card was all marketing hype....not sure if l believe that or not....
Some of the 32mg cards ain't gonna work on P and P2 systems if designed for the P4.... if anyone getting a new card ensure this wont be a problem for ya ... only found that little tid bit out Friday.
New system selected a card with 32mg, and the guy building it, immediatly nominated another more expensive card for power requirements.....guess he's right as he's installing it for the same price as the original one.
Furby or Justin is this right...
Get a video card with TV out to support DVD play through TV. ?

128 MB card is mostly marketing hype...you may get 100 extra 3dmark points, but not worth the extra $50 or $100 it costs
As for 32 meg cards not working in P2 systems i've put my 64 MB GeForce3 in a P2, worked fine...
I'm bringing geeky back...
