    @@@@@What-kind-of-chat-program-should-I-make-?

I am thinking of making a cool chat program as my next project. Do I make a messenger like (where I have central server which is really an ftp site containing the information about all the users),
    server/client
    client/clinet
    server,client/server,client

or which kind of chat program should I make? Any suggestions?

I hate Microsoft, but I use it because I still badly need it. Hehe. Good luck in VB programming.

make it authenticate any files that you can download off peoples servers so you dont spend a long time downloading a file that doesnt work or isnt the actual file you wanted or they said it was.

So AIM and ICQ know everything about your conversation? How do they get that much space to store on their servers.

How can you know abotu the actual file unless you have it on your computer. Or the information the file can be put in the file by the user as "personal Files".

what u shoud do is make a all in one Jumbo, i mean don't build your own chat server, just connect to all of the popular ones like MSN,MIrc,Yahoo,ICQ, and our own vbforums channel. i was goin to do it myself but then i was stuck with improtant other projects,
if you find the ports for those let me know!
    good luck

But if one program is using the same port, then you won't be able to access it

I mean if you are running MSN messenger at the same time, and you try to connect on the same port on which MSN messenger is listening, you will get an error.

I have decided to make my own messenger because it's just waste of time to work on a project that intergrates into some other application.

It's fairly simple to build your own chat program. The only hard part is the server which transfers data from one user to another and that is pretty easy as well.

Check out planetsourcecode.com Theres a few of them there.

All big chat have a server to have the database of the username and userpassword than to connect with the ip and the port.

You could create an awesome chat... you'd want c++ to do it... but you COULD do it.

Make a 3D world... where people actually have lives, it'd be a micture of a game and a chat, use OpenGL to do it. Then have map editors and avatar editors so people can make their own 3d models and 3d worlds.

    That'd be awesome =D

Not really, if the end client could just render the voices..

all that needs to be sent is text, the program does the rest.

Make a chat program that lists all the other users in the room, and when you right click on their name, it allows you to choose to view a list of their files. Then the user can browse them, and if they find somthing they like, they can instant message them and ask for it. That would be cool.

I don't like IRC, well I didn't like mIRC. It just wasn't user-friendly enough for me, and I couldn't figure out which channel to join. I just wanted to chat, but there were so many servers and channels. I would rather have one central server with like maybe 20-30 channels, and just have a choice between one of those. Not a whole bunch of channels that no one needs.

Yeah, that'd be cool, along with the file-sharing thing. Make it a little easier to do it, as in a bunch of people connect to a server and you can search the files of everyone on there...not like it's possible to shut down.
