CapitEx Development Thread

This is the thread for the new Web-based stock exchange game, CapitEx: The Online Virtual Stock Exchange.

Please post all ideas concerning the development, finance, and implementation of CapitEx here so that we can maintain good workflow and communication skills!

If you like what you see and you want to help out, e-mail me (Adam Knisely) at [email protected], and we'll see what you can do to help out. We'll need people who are skilled in the following areas:

• Graphics;
• HTML/JavaScript;
• PHP4, mySQL, Linux development/administration;
  
• Accounting, financial reporting;
• Corporate/securities law;
• Marketing, specifically tend analysis;
  
• Technical writing, content development;
• Idea development; or
  
• Any other useful ideas, or you just want to keep posted on the project.

Please, do NOT post source code here (programming code; JavaScript/HTML is okay), as it may post a potential security risk that we really wouldn't need.

Right then, let the fun of software development begin!

I would love to help; however, I don't do a lot of web development and have never really touched Perl or PHP. (I do know HTML and a functional amount of ASP.) I do the software side of the work for my company, so I might not be much help on the coding side of things, but I could always help with Idea Development and establishing the final rules for the game. But I have a couple of questions:

-- How does the game make us enough money to pay the fees for a PHP/MySQL server?

-- Shouldn't at least the web site admins be able to impeach a Supreme Court Judge? They could be totally ruining the game by awarding huge damages and the like, and there's nothing we could do.

Alright, eveyone, forget about all that last night as I'm going to stay out of chit chat's facist kingdom for awhile.

To answer fencer's questions,

How does the game make us enough money to pay the fees for a PHP/MySQL server?

We've been discussing this on MSN, and the two major ideas were merchandise, where we'd sell coffee mugs, t-shirts, mouse pads, the usual paraphenilia, and accepting donations.

We had a few ideas about the donations bit. We could put donators of $5 a month or whatever on a seperate server with a faster pipe, but I think this would detract from the diversity of the game. The second was that we put everybody who donates into a contest, where the top ten income-pullers or highest net worth guys or biggest portfolio winners win merchandise like TVs, computer stuff, and possibly cash. The stuff would naturally be sponsored, and it would entice people to spend long hours at the game.

But we'd need some money to start off with, any ideas on that?

As the administrators of the game we'd all have the ability to do that; but to get to the Supreme Court, you'd have to be very experienced and skilled, and with that you inherit a sense of responsibility and discipline. I think. Anyways, we can make it so that a Supreme Court decision is a vote from all of the judges, not just one or two.

Ok. Yeah, I'd love to help with ideas, day-to-day admin, ads, getting sponsors, etc. Maybe, just maybe, I could get support from my company. (Although it probably wouldn't be of a financial nature.) I'm assuming we'll also probably have banner ads?

Adam -- Glad you're back - but avoid too many lively discussions, ok?

Although they probably wouldn't pay the bills, we'll probably have to resort to banner ads for partial financial support. Remember, we're all volunteering for this, so our only expenses are those that have to do with maintaining the server, which really shouldn't be above $1500 /month each.

Okay. Infact with banner ads you can't gain the money you need for having a profitable system. In the beginning we do it a bit smaller I suppose. When our server is going to be overloaded we can transfer it to another one.



I discussed with him before and induced him to use php/mySQL .
My part is db-design, programming and what ever has to be done - I already created a layout but when there's somebody with more creative ideas I'd be really glad

I think it's okay to improve your layout. When you remember: "The concept is good but the colors are sticky..."
