.NET is the latest and greatest addition to the MS development OS range of products, encapsulating many things demanded by Users, including full XML support and one step Intranet and Internet deplopment.
Ok copied that from an MS briefing package

Hi,
It's difficult to sum up in a sentence. According to Microsoft, .NET is a "revolutionary new platform, built on open Internet protocols and standards, with tools and services that meld computing and communications in new ways".
A more practical definition would be that .NET is a new environment for developing and running software applications, featuring ease of development of web-based services, rich standard run-time services available to components written in a variety of programming languages, and inter-language and inter-machine interoperability.

It seems to be aimed at just about EVERYTHING.
The main point to .NET as I see it is that you can theoretically develop the same(ish) code to run on almost any hardware or operating system.
Part of MS's plan to take over the world. In the future every app will either be written by MS or written using one of their products.
