    NetBIOS

    hey,

After finding some scary stuff and pure bordem i looked at http://grc.com - The scary bit was that my NetBIOS port (139) was open for attack yet there shouldnt be anything running on that. Is NetBIOS something that you have to install because by using a utility such as Legion i can in a matter of minutes find a pc and connect to it and remove the contents of the hard drive while printing swear words out of the printer, plz note i dont actually do this but the potential is scary, all you need is a net connection and a persons ip.

This is all done through NetBIOS, i am wondering how i can get NetBIOS running / stop it running ?

NetBIOS is basically the Windows Networking control subsystem It runs everything, so you can't get rid of it. However, with the aforementioned firewall you can stop it going where it shouldn't, because it has tendencies to go as far as it can.

Yeah i have got that (the firewall) the only problem is though when its not running it says the port is open, i then try to connect to it using a vb app which works, so then i use windows explorer to connect to it by typing \\-ip-\ which conencts to the NetBIOS port on my pc (replace -ip- with my ip) yet doesnt work, but on other pcs this alows me to connect. ????
