is it possible to make a vcd that will play an avi file in a dvd player?

I don't think you could, only MPEGs

VCDs are MPEGs, so no AVI. Why would you want AVI, anyway? It's just as good as MPEG and file size is ridiculous.

i cant fit an entire movie in mpeg format onto one cd. Instead i make it an avi using the divx codec which preserves the video and sound quality while at the same time compressing it so it fits on one cd. So theres no way to make a vcd with an avi?

Uhh...your DVD player isn't going to decode a DivX
You have to take whatever file it is and change it to MPEG2 (I think...maybe MPEG1 even?? ).
Split it up into 625/675 MB chunks (I THINK...)
Then use something that burns VCDs, like Roxio WinONCD PE or whatever.
