I think that depends on your programming expierence. Co you have C expierence, Pascal, etc? There are some books that are good for going from C to C++ and other that are good for someone starting from scratch. Really depends on that..

I think that Teach yourself Visual C++ 6.0 in 21 days is one of the excellent ones!!

Yeah, I've used one of the "Teach Yourself...In 21 Days" books before, I managed to get it down pretty well after a month or so of really reading it.

you could also buy a package called Game Programming 3.0 which has 3 books for learning C++ in PDF file format and it comes with DirectX 6.1 SDK, Genesis Game World Editor, Visual C++ and I think that's it.
I think it's around $45 USD and about $65 CDN.

I've got that Beginning C++ 6 book by WRox, and it's pretty good. It's really fairly easy going I think, if you already know some of the jargon and can kinda think 'prorammery'
I read loads of reviews before I bought it on Amazon, and they said that the first bit was excellent, but the MFC section was a bit of a waste of time. I figured I just needed to learn the basics first and I'd worry about the reast later.
Another C++ book I've had recommended to me several times is C++: How to Program by Deitel & Deitel. It's very good and explains everything cery thoroughly, but takes it a bit faster maybe than the Wrox book and is a bit less interactive. The Wrox book has lots of examples and encourages you to try them out. They're both good books though.

If you want a foot into VC++ and do not know C++, I Would strongly recomend learning the base of the language, the Book I have found very useful(other than the fact I knew most of it prior to getting it) is "C++ From the Ground up Second Edition" It starts you off on a beginners level, and gets you quickly into intermediate/advance topics, the ISBN is : 0-07-882405-2 you can always check http://isbn.nu for lowest prices online , I always used bookpool.com for technical books since they almost always have lowest prices on technical books, and almost always 30%-50% cheaper than that of Borders, barnes and nobles and Amazon. also to get a good feel of VC++ IDE and capabilities on top of C++, Special Edition Using VC++ 6, is a good one, it's ISBN is : 0-7897-1539-2.
Good Luck and happy learning
