Day Shift

After working 6 months of graveyard shift (6pm to 6am) I am on day shift (8am to 8pm)... *yawn* its too early

12 hours of work?! What the!? I'm on 9 to 5 but i may get on a day that i have external company clients(not for the company i work for), so i may live 5-5:30 from work and have an appointment at 6:30 to 7:30 and another at 8:30 to 9:30 but that is an extreme case scenario. Usual is one company appointment per week.

Yeah I work 12/3. 12 hours a day for 3 days a week with a 8 hour payback shift every other week. I love working 12/3 because i get 3 or 4 days off every week.

Ah, you should have told that it's 3 days a week! That is...Mmm that i never done so i don't know if it's better than 9 to 5 for 5 days a week but is 36 hours and 9 to 5 is 40 hours, so...

Like I said, I have an 8 hour payback every other week. I dont work a normal 40 hour week. I work an 80 hour 2 week period. 36 hours one week and 44 the next week.

I'm on a 35 hour week which sounds like a good thing until you realise I'm a contractor and paid by the hour. Stil, I do like being able to do a half day Friday.

Should not say that since people think that Greeks are lazy (BS with some exception on the public sector) but in some public sector jobs they have the 8 to 3 shift and they will end up on a nice 10 to 2 shift. My first job as a little sapator was on the public sector(ministry of labor) and i was doing a 10 to 6 but ended up doing a 11 to 6 .So yeah i stole 1 hour.

No one in it's right mind wants to leave Greece. The problem is purely economic. There are A LOT of people starving here. There ain't a lot of jobs (i have a strong CV and i am struggling to get decent jobs, let alone decent cash).
Before 2009 there ain't many people leaving Greece and we were doing what you are describing (lazying out) but now we cannot. Imagine that i have to tolerate a job that requires MVC coding!! I've been to GB for vacation and for university. Yeah, i don't want to be rude but i could not live there, i mean i better starve, to death, to the final bone gets melted...
But others here would love to move or have moved to London, so...

I work 7:45-4:30 M-F. I really wish I could do 4 10-hour days a week instead. It seems like I get to work, check email, launch VS then its time to go home. I guess I dont realize how much time my face is married to VS every day. It flies by for me.

Personally, except from where i am now, previously i was, get to work, leave for appointment,get to work,debug debug debug,bleahhh,eat,debug debug(yeap, you guessed it:bleaaahhhh!) ,leave work,go to appointment, eat, socialize,refuse appointment in rude manner, nighttime activities, sleep, wake up...oh hold..zzzzzz,wake up...ookk,ohh hold...zzzzzz...WAKE UUUUUUPPPPPPPPPPP!! K, get to work,leave for appoin......

The best working scheduled a couple of year ago was: Get late at work,fool around,a little programming,a little user support,eat,fool around, leave early, all the other day is miiiiiine!!!! Good times then.

I can only assume you are talking about the UK, I visited outside of Manchester a while back. I am from Florida and had an awesome time. The one thing that is IMPOSSIBLE to get over here is Doner Kebab. I had one over there and cried tears of joy. I have given up trying to find it here as everyone looks at me like I am crazy.

Oooh, I envy you. I like those kind of schedules. But it's very rare in my line of work. A schedule like that would enhance life-work balance, which is a good thing Though, 12 hours of work, I must say, would be exhausting.

We imported Doner Kebabs from Greece / Turkey actually. Its a pity you didn't discover Shish Kebabs, as they are even better imho

I am considered a "strange eater" because i remove all the onions and tomatoes and the sauce but everyone else seems to enjoy it.

I recall the general complaint from the Germans was that the public sector was too big, in-efficient and costly to run...

maybe that is the problem...a large in-efficient public sector...

The problem is that the politicians have bowed their heads and a$$es down.
The public sector, if ever a problem, have shrunk, if i remember correctly, 30% so if this was the problem then we shouldn't have problems now, but we do.
The actual and "hidden" problem is that the big heads of the world with collaboration from our rotten politicians wants to use Greece's energy supply's in order to feed Europe with cheap energy and not depend from Russia. Well it may result in a couple of mil starving in the process but will get the job done.
For me the problem now is that we haven't hanged 2/3 of our politicians, yet.

My new'ish job I'm at now I'm 9 am - 5 pm M - F with 1 hour paid lunch and allot of perks. So 35 hours a week, 7 mile commute, free snacks, company holiday parties in the office during working hours where we get free beer and wine, 15% annual bonus and an annual performance review raise. I work for a privately owned family business.
We only get two holidays a year and no perks. I'm certainly not getting wealthy here.

I normally work 8 to 4:39 with a 30 minute lunch 40 hour week.
As they want me to do IT as well as Software Engineering I sometimes have to pull all nighters to repair servers or install software company wide.

Anyhow, my first job was for the Public Sector (ministry of labor). I bet i could beat everyone's a$$ here as a dream job, (except, since i was collaborating with the ministry and i wasn't a ministry permanent i didn't have the high 2000+ salaries). As i've said before "The best working scheduled a couple of year ago was: Get late at work,fool around,a little programming,a little user support,eat,fool around, leave early, all the other day is miiiiiine!!!!" So i was about 11 at work and left at 4:30 -5, on Wednesdays we usually had a party in the2nd floor with a lot of meat an beer (i was literally dragged from my chair up to the second floor, to attend), i guess after that we were digesting all the meat until 5. Since i was also the admin i was usually going to people to resolve serious issues (unplugged printer, save an excel document or give permissions), that was a problem since i was usually got treated some sweets after a job well done (thankfully i have a good metabolism so i didn't gain pounds), so with all the sugar, some days i was like tatatatatatatattataataaaaatatatatta.. like the ice age squirrel. Since i was a collaborator and not from permanent personal, i skipped any serious (if any) stuff meetings...Ah, also i had exclusive access to the building IT servers and supply room(until a FU#$@#$ AS#$@#$ came a few months before we leave and took my lovely key )...So,ok, if i wanted papers i got papers, if i wanted diskettes i got them, if i wanted cables, mouses, pads, little stuff for personal use, well..So another things was that i could "slide" into ministry programs for cheaper computer supplies. I was able to get a 1000Euros computer for 150Euros(beat that!) and i got a tax deduction also since i was in the specific program(beat that also!)...So yeah good times, not sure if they have change much now that we have the crisis. I know that 2000+ salaries went to 800+ salaries but i think they are still partying in the second floor....So i could easily go there again with a 800Euros salary (and also do outer jobs while on my 2 monitor IT station)...Ohhh that was THE job ...

Sounds like I'd have to where a mask to work to do better than that. I've only worked in the private sector, they expect results...

And it was 11 to 5-5:30.
The issue here is that this was a sub domain of the ministry of labor that had access to private institutions. In order for the private institutions to get funded the people that worked on sector "B" of the ministry sub domain had to get a "little something" in return . So 2000+ may well became 2000+2000+ . Anyhow i would love to work there again but i am afraid that i may get used to it and not study no more.
So having badmouthed the public sector is should have to say about the private sector:
In my previous work, as i've said:

So the private sector job was a 9 to 5 but ended up a 9 to 6- 6:30, i could have a 30 minutes break, most people ate in front of the computer, continuing work(i was taking a walk outside to clear my mind). I had a task manager-timer-scheduler service running in the background and i had to complete certain task in a finite amount of time else i was getting messagebox alerts(!), that sucked bad because programming and ESPECIALLY debugging cannot be a precise timely operation. So i was constantly getting some (don't remember the exact expression) "observations" about doing the work on time. Unfortunately or fortunately my character is a little rebellious so i didn't give a flying fk about the observations(so finally instead of getting in a actual fist fight, i forced them to give me the boot so i can collect the firing comprehension). The job was exhausting and the framework was so unnecessary complicated that if we wanted to put a control in a form we had to create about 50 lines of code and then add events. What is also bad, is that i was mainly on asp.net debugging errors that were coming from the winforms main dll's. So when i debugged i was pulled inside the core dll's that could work fine on the desktop but needed extensions for the internet. So fixing something for asp may broke something else(thankfully we had version control),the plus was the money were alright but i won't go back there even if they offered me 3000Euros.
One more thing that is positive is that there was a bakery nearby that was making the best tiropites (http://thessdiet.gr/uploads/articles...F%84%CE%B1.jpg) so the food was a pleasure.

Not usually. In all the high tech companies I've worked for the IT department handled mostly hardware support and installing purchased software.

Sofware Engineering produced software as a product. Much like Mechanical Engineering produced physical products.

The smaller companies I've worked for that do not get high tech try to lump everything they do not understand into one box.

Not unlike a backwoods farmer asking a kid with a cell phone to rewire his house because he obviously knows about that electricity stuff.
