As I said in the other post, I'm interested but can't do it alone. So, who's interested?

Umm...

I would be willing to help, only because I am completely bored. But their are two simple/stupid questions:

What is a Quake Engine?
What is a Quake Shell?
Explanations

There is a moderate explanation in the other thread, but I'll explain it in more detail here.

First of all, a shell is the user interface part of an operating system. For win9x/nt it is explorer.exe. The shell includes the desktop, start bar, system tray, the tasks bar in the start bar (but not file browsing). Other people have already made alternative shells for windows, the most popular being LiteStep (which operates like Linux) and geoshell. Geoshell is written entirely in VB, and is open source . Also, recently the people behind litestep and geoshell have got together to work on a 'shell services' back-end called Raptor. What it does is handle all the complicated communication with Windows so that shell developers can concentrate on the features of their shell.

Now, the 'Quake Engine' is simply the core of the game Quake, ie the game is made up of its maps, textures, soundfx, music, and engine. The 'engine' is the code part, the part that does the work. ID, the people who made Quake, gave away the full source code for it after they released Q3. The idea would be for us to take this engine and use it for our shell's main interface, modifying it to suit. But as lord_dude has pointed out on the other thread, getting our hands on the engine for a 3d game like descent would probably be better, allowing for more degree of movement.

So, a Quake Shell is a windows interface in which you walk around in a Quake environment. We now have the possibility of it being a 'Descent Shell' as well.

as i said in the other thread, i'm looking for code 'and found a lot) on how to englobe open glide in a project, and i can assure you to get a smoothly-working engine is not that immediate.

if anyone wishes to work on this, let me know.

cheers,

Language

You guys realize that this will probibly have to be writen in C#, C, C++, or ASM. And it will take alittle experiance and time to get it going. But i am all for it and i will supply the storage space for files and code and help in any way possible. also we might try to recruit a few people.
We will need people who know:
Glide
Open GL
C++
ASM
Grafix Designers
someone to coordinate the effort
and ...
a copyright

Regards E.P.

Im just curious. By obtaining the source code for a game what would you want to add to it? Is it more of an experience thing or do you want to add features to the game that are not found in it already?

Dilenger4: My vision at least, is not to make the desktop into a game, at least not in a FPS style, but to get the graphics & AI engines from a game, not story, levels, or gameplay. It would save massive amounts of work, especially if we can get a really good graphics engine.

ExtremePimpness: Yes, I realize this. So people, please volunteer - we need you!

I would like to co-ordinate this project, but for at least the next few months I can't dedicate any serious time, I volunteered for a few too many projects as of late .

Also, just some more of my thoughts on how we could design this. I have been thinking that level design would become very important, with powerful tools for (relatively) quickly designing 'levels', which are in fact just 3d desktops. RPG elements such as NPC to talk to could be very interesting.

Also, from what I've seen of Litestep desktops, there needs to be some easy ways to modify a desktop to add new shorcuts to programs, becuase everyone has different programs they want in their menus.

Also, now this is a crazy idea, how about a 'Network Neighbourhood' system where there is a 'Network' level that is accessed from a door somewhere in everyone's desktop. This door would of course have key-code next to it for password-like protection, in the 'Network' level, and there would be a seperate door to each person's desktop. The multi-player craziness that could spring from this is very interesting. For instance, you could be invincible in your desktop, but susceptible to being killed in the network neighbourhood area or other people's desktops (Of course you would respawn in your desktop in the case of death). But that is just really hard craziness that I came up with, we'd have to do a lot before we could even think of implementing anything like that.

So, who likes these ideas? Who's inspired? Who thinks I'm crazy?
