Cool Good VB.Net self-learning book for first-time programming student

I need to teach someone VB.Net (2010 if that matters.)

A little description about my student:
My student is an intelligent young man but very new to "computer thingies".
He is not a power user, doesn't know anything about core computer science.

He wants to learn programming just as a hobby.
But, I think, if he gets interested in this, probably I'll be able to convince him to take CS as major.
My target is to make him efficient enough so that he will be able to impress his friends (and probably GF too) showing his own little desktop apps within 2-3 months.
In next step I'll start web programming.

I'm looking for a TEACH-YOURSELF type book which is written in clear language and good explanation.
Obviously I'll help him if he gets stuck, but I don't want to (and don't have time to) babysit him.

I have absolutely no idea about beginner level books. So, please help me on this.

In addition if you can suggest for good "how-computer-works" or "fundamental-of-computers" type books, that would be a great help too.

    Thanks.

I refer every new person to home and learn. It's online and free, and free is my second favorite 4-letter f word. I started programming in 2011 and home and learn was number one source of learning.

With out a doubt wrox.com you cant go wrong. Great simple layout, easy to use and quite often you can get emails back from the authors.

Beginning Visual Basic 2012 is a great beginners book.

I also cant say enough for reference books to go along side a tutorial book. Aimed at all levels and teaches lots of little tricks and tips.
