Joomla?
Do we even need Joomla for us to make a decent website? I've been using just Notepad/Notepad++ for my simple website development tasks but my co-instructors seemto be interested with Joomla. Should we go for it? Haven't tried it that much and we may need some training for us to get acquainted with this Joomla, will it be even woworth it?

Re: Joomla?
Joomla is another CMS(Content Management System) like Wordpress. I believe all CMS have their own good frameworks with several facilities, making it easy for users to develop websites using it. But the initial startup or grasping the basics of the framework might look a bit tough. That depends on coders.

It's not necessary. Even with core PHP you can make good websites, and can even develop your own frameworks.

Both are just code editors ! In which you would write your code. Even if you move onto Joomla, you would be using one of these(or alternatives) for coding!

Re: Joomla?
Joomla is a free and open CMS (or Content Management System). It allows you to create a website using PHP and a MySQL database. However, it is necessary to have a server if you want to publish your pages on the World Wide Web. Joomla! is under the GNU GPL license, a copyleft license for general use. If you want to learn more about CMS, read this article: What is a Content Management System? This CMS runs on Linux, FreeBSD, MacOSX, Solaris, and AIX servers. Download it: Download – joomla.org.

But, I don't think Wordpress is a CMS. It can be used for Simple Blogs. But, for CMS, it will be more complicated than you would think, bro.

It is a Content Management System !
Read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WordPress
A web content management system[5] (web CMS) is a bundled or stand-alone application to create, manage, store and deploy content on Web pages. Web content includes text and embedded graphics, photos, video, audio, and code (e.g., for applications) that displays content or interacts with the user. A web CMS may catalog and index content, select or assemble content at runtime, or deliver content to specific visitors in a requested way, such as other languages. Web CMSs usually allow client control over HTML-based content, files, documents, and web hosting plans based on the system depth and the niche it serves.

Re: Joomla?
WordPress is a CRM ... it contains content and allows the creation and management of it. It has users, drafts, publication, and even allows for modules, plugins and themes and templates. It also has syndication features (ala RSS and other modules) and commenting features... sounds like a CMS to me.

Oops! Looks like I'm wrong. Thanks for correcting me. I thought that Wordpress is nothing more than a simple blogging tool.

Re: Joomla?
Joomla is a really ugly mess behind its pretty-ish façade. You absolutely don't need it, and if you think you might be modifying it or needing some custom extensions, I would recommend giving it a miss.

Oh, I see. I have used WP many years ago (Maybe 3 to 4). It looks like I have to once again try WP. Forum Capabilities in WP? May I know how to do that?

Re: Joomla?
look for WP & bbPress... bbPress is the forum platform they built for their own support forums... after numberous requests, they created an integration bridge... eventually it was converted into a module for WP (if I remember right, I haven't been active in that community for sometime).

Re: Joomla?
Joomla & Wordpress are the most simple cms systems, if you wanna go advance on creating/editing i prefer drupal, it's takes a bit more time to create a template , but it gives you a lot more options.

Words I thought I'd never see in the same sentence: "Joomla" and "Simple" ... you do know that Joomlas is a Drupal fork, right? I've worked with it before... I'd hardly call it simple.
