Re: FORUM ISSUES: Report Upgraded Issues in this thread

A couple days later, and I'd have to say that things feel better, now. I'm beginning to expect things to work right, which is a whole lot better than last week. It looks like the changes may have solved things. A few more days will tell, but the fact that nobody got one in between these two posts is a good sign.

Re: FORUM ISSUES: Report Upgraded Issues in this thread

So, can we get an update on things:

    1) Search: This appears not to be working, yet. The search options seem pretty weak compared to the old search. For one thing, I see that you can search by user, but you can't restrict to threads started by the user. It also appears that you can't narrow down the forums to search. I used the search a fair amount to look for threads I started for various reference reasons. If I am understanding the current situation, I'd end up with ALL my posts, perhaps sorted by date, but that's not much help.

    2) Member List: A few people have asked about it, and I recall that it was so costly in time that it was deffered till later. I'm just wondering where this one stands.

    3) Code tags on the Quick Reply: I can type them in, but I get lazy at times.

Re: FORUM ISSUES: Report Upgraded Issues in this thread

Search - It appears everything is indexed now. As to the other functionality, we'll need to talk to vBulletin about that. I'm not sure there is much we can do unless there are add-ins that add that functionality back.

Member list - As stated before, we've turned this off. I can ask for it to be turned back on, but we were told it comes at a performance hit.

Code icons - not that hard to type. You can always click quick reply twice and go the advanced reply form....

    Those are my quick answers
I'll pass these three points to the dev team and see what they say. I'll ask if specifically about the last two and see if they can take care of those now.

I wasn't aware you could do that so I just gave it a try... and got my first hang of the week. Ah, such bitter irony.

It's definitely been running signigicantly better in the last week or so though.

Re: FORUM ISSUES: Report Upgraded Issues in this thread

The inadequacy of search is pretty disturbing. However, I may be misunderstanding how the new search works. Therefore, I will show what I did, and what results I got, in case somebody has a suggestion:

Initially, I decided to search for a CodeBank thread I have that is a small profiler class.

    1) Search on my name and Profiler: No results.
    2) Search on my name: Thousands of results really fast.
    3) Search on my name and profile: Six results, not including the CodeBank thread.

I also noted that there is a drop down for search entire post, but there is no other option. When I click the dropdown, there appear to be two options, but since they are both flat black, I can't do anything with that. Perhaps it is black on black, but even so it isn't much use.

I then decided to try to find the class I posted in the CodeBank that I use as a base class for Excel:

    1) Search on my name and Excel: Search never completes. This was tried several times with the same result.

    2) Search on my name and Excel class: Search never completes.

I then decided to try to find my CodeBank thread on passing data between forms. I put the word Definitive in the thread subject, which makes for a reasonable search word.

    1) Search on my name and Definitive: Six, or so, results, withe the CodeBank thread being the last of them. In other words, this worked.

Finally, since I am one of the few people who spend any time working with UDP, I have a couple UDP classes that I have directed people to over the years. One is in the CodeBank, while the other is in Networking.

    1) Search on my name and UDP: No results.

In summary: I searched on four known topics from the CodeBank. One was found, the other three searches failed. If I was misusing the search feature, I'd like to know in what way. If I was not misusing the search feature, then it really doesn't work very well at all.

Re: FORUM ISSUES: Report Upgraded Issues in this thread

My first post this morning did not work so well. I typed into the quick replay window then hit post and it just sit there for a long time. Progress bar made it about 1/2 way but after 3 minutes had not completed. When I went back into the forum in another tab I could see my replay had been posted but the forum software is still acting flakey when posting.

It has been faster than it was a few days ago but I still see times where pages are loading slowly and still have some slow posting as well as the issue mentioned here. It does not seem to happen as often as it was but still happens.

Edit: This post went through pretty well only took about 3 seconds.

Edit2: However the edit above took about 45 seconds to post

Re: FORUM ISSUES: Report Upgraded Issues in this thread

    @Shaggy, when search I:

    1.Click advanced search
    2.Search single content search
    3.Choose my required field(s)
    4.(optional) choose any additional options

Here is where I was confused at first. If you don't decided to choose any additional options, then you click the "Search Now" under "Search for post" otherwise you click the "Search Now" under "Choose additional options".

Re: FORUM ISSUES: Report Upgraded Issues in this thread

Ok, that prompted me to do further searching. First off, by using the single content search, there are certainly lots more options, which is nice. Initially, I was able to bring up the profiler thread right off, which was an improvement. I tried the search for the Excel thread in a variety of different ways, and it never returned anything. I then tried the UDP search, and found no results. I switched to searching for udpclient, thinking that UDP might be too short, and got no returns, at first. Once I switched to searching in the Networking section, though, I came up with all the threads I expected, and did so quickly. I then tried again in the Codebank and found the thread after a search that took several minutes. After that, I tried the Excel search again, with the expectation that I would go work out while it searched, to see whether it EVER returned. Oddly, it returned in seconds, and had the thread.

In summary: All searches worked....eventually, except searching on UDP alone. Some of the searches would take several minutes to find anything, though.

At least I would say that it is working.

I pointed out the search stuff internally as well. I'll see if anybody has any suggestions for making it better.

One thing to keep in mind is that you are searching nearly four million posts. That's a lot of noise, err information, to search through even with indexing and such.

Re: FORUM ISSUES: Report Upgraded Issues in this thread

Just as a point of reference I tried a search on another forum I visit.

    Threads: 236,562, Posts: 7,326,269, Members: 221,811

Text search of all posts took about 2-3 seconds before the results were on screen.

btw the other site also uses vBulletin but I do not know what version or what kind of server setup they have. Whatever it is is lightning fast.

I tried to rep BenJones' OP in this thread and it outright refused to do so telling me I can't rep that post. Was something disabled or is this a bug ?

not enough info. "Can't rep that post" <-- is that the error message you received or something more specific? For example, have you hit your quota of reps for the day?

I see nothing strange in the system. Try rep'ing one of his posts lower in the thread. Is it just the OP post, or any of his posts?

did it happen when you click on the star to rep it? Or after the fact, after the popup comes up? when I clicked the star, I got the dialog I expected.

I couldn't rep his OP or his second post but I was able to rep a later post of his(post #6) in the thread.

When I clicked on the star it behaved as I expected, the little dialog where you put your comment popped up but after typing in the comment, it showed that strange message. In other schemes where you are prevented from rating, such as reaching your rep limit for the day, the message comes when you click the star. This is why I think its a bug.

Re: FORUM ISSUES: Report Upgraded Issues in this thread

Ok I just tried to rep another OP in another CodeBank thread and got the same message. I would stake a guess here that it would happen should I try to rep any OP in the CodeBank.

    [EDIT]

Ok now I'm really confused. I was able to rep this OP in the CodeBank. I'm almost certain this is a bug of some sort now.

Giving reputation in the codebank forum seem impossible after the update (getting the same message as Niya). I have probably tried to rep 10 different posts, but with no success, so I just thought giving rep there was disabled for some reason...

Something that has been happening to me a lot is when I try to login, the text in the username field is grey like the text in the textbox, my password also shows up(as in it aint masked). It's almost like I'm editing the original text property of textbox. It's cool though because it brings me to a separate page that allows me to login.

    Seeing some issues this morning.
My first post worked correctly, My second post posted but did not return to the thread within 2 minutes, I finally opened another tab to see if the post had gone through which it had so I eventually aborted the original tab which was still in a loading state.

I tried to go back to the control panel and receive a db error, tried again and got another db error then on the next try could not connect to vb forums then finally I was able to get here to try another post.

    @Brad,
The performance seems to be okay. But a few minutes ago, when I tried to post reply using the Quick Reply option, it keep on showing the "page loading" (waiting for server's response) for some minutes !

But there are some other minor things that I think, which won't take an hour or two, for you guys to get it finished. Like:
    • re-enabling the inline editing option
    • ajax for Quick Reply
    • CODE button in Quick Reply
    • highlighting of the anchor text after inserting the hyperlink
    • etc..

Only some small small things to be finished ! And please do that ASAP. Because the performance issue itself had took months to get rectified. And if you keep on dragging this thing, it would be a negative feedback for the whole site. Wouldn't it be ?

Yup, they're not going there. As I said ... I do get notifications from this particular thread (sometimes), but not from other threads I've started or posted in.

Something else I've noticed that I dunno if y'all are getting as well, but I cannot control the caret in quick reply using my arrow keys. In fact, I cannot control it by clicking the desired location of the quick reply text. Once I start typing, the caret jumps to position, however it's annoying.

Actually, while this is happening to me, as well, it was happening for a LONG time prior to the upgrade (at least a year). I always figured it was just my browser, though I never bothered to test whether it happens only on one browser. It was annoying, but evidently, it wasn't THAT annoying.

Something else that happening is when I choose the add image in quick reply, it won't show all my files in My Pictures. I have to click basic uploader for it to show all the files.

I get this too but only when I post from home. At work my carat behaves correctly. I don't think it's an upgrade issue but if you guys ever manage to figure out how to fix it then let me know because it really chaps my ass.

There is a time limit on how long after a post you can give a person a reputation point for the post. I'm guessing the CodeBank posts are too old to rep.

I tried to do a search just by typing into the little search box. I searched for AUP and got no matches. I typed in VB and got no matches ?

Well that must be a new thing because I'm sure I have repped very old posts before the upgrade.

Re: FORUM ISSUES: Report Upgraded Issues in this thread

I know that I have repped some very old threads, but I don't know what the cutoff is.

By the way, I think there should be a little melody played whenever you give a positive rep, and possibly a different melody if you give a negative. You could call this rep music.
