Hahahaha. A lot of nine year olds for some reason. Those are likely people that aren't willing to share the info. I do that sometimes to, I just put in January 1st.

The crash was later than that (based on my "re-join date", it was July 2002), and wouldn't have that effect - it removed users/posts entirely.
Those dates of birth were almost certainly specified by the users, but I presume that is because it was a default value at some point, and they didn't bother to change it.

It no longer crashes your browser when viewing the bdays think its been about 2 years or more now that it doesnt crash
