    Resolved [RESOLVED] Hostname Lookup Failed

I have been bugged with this error numerous times when accessing VBForums. Below is a recent error message:

    Code:
    Hostname lookup for "newreply.php?do=postreply&t=630402" failed
Is this hostname lookup some kinda feature at VBF that can be turned off?

No, never seen that before. I think that's perhaps some issue with the ISP and their DNS

    Re: Hostname Lookup Failed

I checked with our IT guy and he says it's definitely not happening from our end. Since most other forum sites are blocked I can't verify if this behaviour happens or not with other forum sites.

From home I have never had this kind of an issue with VBF, but then I seldom access the site from home, like once in a week or so. From office it's every fifteen minutes or so

I'm afraid there's not much I can offer on this except that in nearly six years of dealing with these forums, this is the first I've heard of this.

    Re: Hostname Lookup Failed

Yup, this is the first time I have got this error, so I am as confused as you are. I have noticed that this is happening in my current job only, it never happened in the earlier jobs and never from my home. I have already asked our IT department to see if they can get the ISP to check the DNS records. In case something does crop up, I shall post back here.

Thanks for the patience and help !

    Re: Hostname Lookup Failed

Something else struck me this morning. This error occurs only when I am doing a POST operation, like making a post or a thread. GET commands never face this problem, opening threads or links to posts never had this issue. Could this be significant?

From home I am using Firefox, but like I said earlier, I have never had this problem from home.

Today, even from office things seem to be working alright. I shall keep an eye on it.

    Re: Hostname Lookup Failed

I was free from those errors for the better part of this week, but the error reappeared today. I switched to IE and now I am able to post through IE without any issues.

There's a setting in Opera (if you type "opera:config" in the address bar) which enables or disables web lookup for a hostname. I played around with the setting a little but didn't see any change in the results. Still got the hostname lookup errors. So maybe it's a browser issue.

    Is Opera turbo enabled?
Delete it. They just clutter threads anyway.

    Re: [RESOLVED] Hostname Lookup Failed

Opera keeps turning it on and off at random, presumably based on the network performance. I dunno if it has a role to play, but now that you have raised the point, it possibly could. I haven't observed keenly if there was a relation between the hostname lookup errors and Opera turbo being on/off at that time.

I have been using IE 8 henceforth and so far the problem hasn't surfaced even once.

    Re: [RESOLVED] Hostname Lookup Failed

I turned off Opera Turbo and the problem disappeared. But then I lost the Turbo...
