About signature
I think, members belonging to Newly Registered User group (ie. with posts less than ~10) shouldn't be allowed to use signatures !
Because most of the spammers try to post 1 or 2 threads (with single posts) and includes some ad links in their signature...!

Re: About signature
I'm not sure but I think that currently you need more than 2 posts to have a signature. In any case if you see ads by new poeple in their signatures just Report the post and we'lll take care of it.

I have already done that
But I think, you should increase the count to about 10 or 20 !!! Otherwise, you need to do this removal of ad links in signature, manually.

Re: About signature
What you reported wasn't actually in an official signature but rather text in the post but I removed it anyhow. And thanks for the suggestion but the current limit (whatever it is) works okay as it.

I agree! It would add some assurance to whether the new member is serious about being a member of the from and not just posting for advertising purposes.

Re: About signature
It works just fine the way it is and in any case it doesn't really affect regular members.

Then try adding a script(or MOD) to remove external links posted by the new members. ie, they could post links of sites belonging to the Internet Company (like vbforums, devx, etc..) and other links should be removed automatically.
How's this idea ?

Re: About signature
We already have an algorithm that looks at links in posts by new members and most of them get flagged for review by mods before the post is allowed.
And call the rest "job security".

Even if the posts or threads or the links posted is removed by the mods, they remain intact in certain sites like in Google search (where the bot might already collected what he had posted), in some other sites like bigresource.com (something like that) which will cache the first post of all threads, etc.
So, the benefit for the poster is that, the links to his site is being promoted within seconds and more backlinks to his site

Yeah, I realize that but we don't have to put up with that carp here at vbforums.

Maybe, Marty and others will come up with a solution for this
But this kind of SPAM posts are really affecting other members. I mean, those who wish to answer the threads that are not being RESOLVED, will also check these SPAMmed threads. And what ? They wasted their time opening these SPAM threads. !!!

Re: About signature
I wont go in to details (because that would help any spammers who read it), but this thread inspired something extra to be added to our spam prevention methods.
Hopefully this will lead to a noticeable reduction in the spam that non-moderators see, but there could still be some that slips past the various measures we use... so please keep up the good work of reporting any that you find.

I completely agree with new members not being allowed to use signatures. It stops as you said, Unwanted spam.

You would click on the "Rate this post" link or the image that is location at the bottom of all non-chitchat type posts. In the window that appears select "I disapprove" and enter a comment reflecting why you disapprove of that post then click "Add to Reputation". The same thing applies when adding to a users reputation but you would select "I approve" and write a positive comment instead.

Re: About signature
Most people can't give negative ratings - I'm fairly sure it is now only PowerPosters (people with >2000 posts), and moderators/admins.
