    Windows update -- keeps installing

I have a windows update file KB938464-v2 past few days that continually sits in my toolbar waiting to be installed.

When I shut down the computer, there it is, the little icon wanting to install.

    Again and again.

I even went to the Windows update site and looked at my installation history and it shows this being installed 10 times (so far). !

It also shows a "good" complete install.

    First off --

How do I get rid of the downloaded file? Not the installed file which would be in add/remove programs BUT the downloaded file in the tool bar.

Until I get rid of that, this won't stop !

Where do these files download to?

    THANKS

Re: Windows update -- keeps installing

    From Windows help:

You can hide the update, and then Windows Update won't offer it to you again unless you choose to restore it.
    I hope that helps?

Re: Windows update -- keeps installing

I dont know if its the same update but recently at work a lot of our machines have been failing to install an update and it causes the machines to never finish shutting down because they just sit there on the "installing update 1 of 1, please do not turn off your computer it will shutdown automatically". We even left one of them overnight and it still said that in the morning

Re: Windows update -- keeps installing

Pardon my ignorance but how do I hide the update? I can't just delete it?

I don't want to hide all of toolbar icons.

    Chris,

This is an "XML cores services 4.0 service pack v2"? and "something", maybe this, has been a real nightmare for one of my PC's past 2 days.

Constant crashing, I can't access my F10 bios setup, did a virus and malware scan all ok.

    That's the weird part --

I scanned the piss out of the hard drive (for an hour) with anti virus and it didn't crash at all.

It also won't crash when the system is idle.

But the minute I bring up any software or do any normal activity it goes black and shuts down.

I've tested the ram, video card -- everything. I've never had a problem like this.

I have a feeling it's that windows update.

I turned off automatic updates....from now on, I' going to pick and choose
    what to install.

Re: Windows update -- keeps installing

Yeah I always leave it set to "notify me but dont download and install" on my PC.
Are you on XP or Vista?

Also, there's a log file, C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log that might be able to help you, its pretty verbose but maybe you can see some error or something in there relating to the times that this update keeps getting installed? I dunno.
Oh and have you had a look in the event logs to see if there is anything related in there? (Start -> Run -> eventvwr -> OK)

yeah, I looked at those yesterday -- can't really decipher those event numbers.

in the process of swapping out another PC -- hoping it isn't the hd -- I had a hd go bad from a defrag the other day and I defragged this one too.

    I'll never defrag again.

it's the god damn hard drive -- second one to go bad because of "smart defrag".

one was a maxtor, the other is a western digital so there you go.

I've never ever heard of a defrag ruining a hard drive or file system... what is this Smart Defrag you refer to? Is that some 3rd party defrag program?

"Smart Defrag" is the term Diskeeper used for their automatic defragment feature. You set it once, and it will defrag as needed, supposedly when the system is idle too.

Ah I see... I've never had any reason to use any kind of disk defrag utility other than the built in one in Windows and cant really see why you would want to risk using a third party one.

One of the main reasons for using 3rd party disk defragment programs is that they don't require administrative privillege to run as the Windows' builtin disk defragment. In a corporate environment, most users do not have administrator rights.

I'm aware of that, I work in an IT support company but if the users dont have admin rights then they wouldnt be able to install this Smart Defrag program... or do you mean that the admins install it for them? Anyway I guess none of this matters!

I was thinking the same thing but Microsoft didn't put a link to that info in the above article.

    Edit:

    To hide an update:

    1. Go to Windows update page.
    2. View " View available up dates".
    3. Select an update, right click and select hide update.

    From Windows help:

    Restore and install hidden updates

Hidden updates are updates you've asked Windows not to notify you about or install automatically. To enhance the security and performance of your computer, restore all important and recommended updates.

    Click to open Windows Update.

In the left pane, click Restore hidden updates.

Select the updates that you want to install, and then click Restore. To see if you've selected all important and recommended updates, check the information in the Type column, next to each update name. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Windows will check for updates, and then prompt you to install the updates that you have restored and any new updates that might be available.

    Note
Some updates that you try to restore might not appear in the list of updates that Windows offers you. This happens only when Windows finds a more recent update that addresses the same problem as the update you tried to restore.

Re: Windows update -- keeps installing

    ok try this

double click that icon to start the installation. you will get an option for a regular or custom type of installation. Select 'custom'. It will then show you a window where you can uncheck the update and click on finish. it won't ask you again...

    hope this helps...
