"Red Ring of Death" and "Generosity"

My XBox finally lost its struggle for survival today. The nation weeps.

Since it's several months out of warranty, I figured I'd have a crack at fixing it myself.

    Two things made me angry.

    1. The rabidly over-engineered and secretive way that MS designed the case of the Xbox. Were they expecting it to be attackhed with Armour Piercing weapons? It would seem that way. Also You need three hands to do everything.

    2. Those hyenas on Youtube that attempt to extort dozens of dollars out of you in exchange for what appears to be a fat stoned man talking slowly about very simple electronic concepts.

So to hell with that, I shall attempt to find my own solution WITHOUT ANYONE'S HELP and then post USEFUL photographs of the procedure for FREE in the PUBLIC DOMAIN.

I can think of nothing that would make me happier, than to run to Bill to beg for an extended warranty as he laughs with glee. Hang on, sorry no, that's a lie.

Re: "Red Ring of Death" and "Generosity"

360's have a standard 3 year warranty against the red ring of death, no matter when you purchased it.

Now, if you were unfortunate enough to have bought yours at release, you are probably screwed.

Me personally, I never buy systems at the initial release. I always wait until at least a year later. In the case of the 360, I waited two years, and bought the Elite model. Result? Died one year later almost to the exact day I originally bought it.

The 360 has some great games on it, and Xbox Live > you, but the hardware is pants.

Re: "Red Ring of Death" and "Generosity"

It's still RRoDing after my first attemptto fix it. Apparently the metal chassis is bent as an unwanted side effect of manufacture, over time this curvature is transferred to the motherboard (compounded by the almost waching-machine-like levels of vibration) and this causes the GPU to part company with the motherboard.

I failed on the first atempt and therefore I'm going to strip it down salvage the heat-sinks and the awesome dual-fan and throw the rest in the bin. The salvaged parts will be placed on my "random fans, heatsinks and motors" shelf alongside the fan and heat sink from my old Xbox 1. It's like a family graveyard for half-baked MS hardware.

All I need now is Bill Gates' skull.

I might get an N64 instead.

    1) Go to used game store and purchase a refurbished 360.
    2) Take it home and swap yours with it within the week.
    3) Now take it back and get store credit (Since it's broke, that's the best they will offer).
    4) Buy something (Games preferably) with said credit and take it to another store to sell for cash.

1 working xBox360 and roughly $50 for having to endure the hassle.

...Or I could just buy a new one and be ranting about Fallout 3 again within the hour.

Except that XBoxes are like hen's teeth at the moment. Town was fun yesterday though, would have been much more fun had I the foresight to take a M16 with me. Opportunity missed
