Cannot Install VB 2008 Under Vista Ultimate 32-Bit

Hi, I can't install VB 2008 on my friend's computer running Vista Ultimate 32-bit.

It gets to the point it has to install .NET 3.5 SP1 and acts like it's going to go on to the next step but then exits with an error.

I've downloaded the .NET 3.5 SP1 installer from Microsoft but that exit's with an error, but it gives me a chance to see the error log.

Here it is:

Somebody please help us!! He's going crazy over here!

Hey,

If I have read the error message correctly, it is looks to see if you have SP1 for .Net Framework 2.0 installed before proceeding. You don't have it installed, so it can't continue.

Install SP1 for .Net Framework 2.0 and then try re-installing.

Before I go on, though, I downloaded this verification utility:

And it said the computer had .NET 2.0 SP1 installed :S

I thought .Net 3.5 had to have 2.0 SP1 and 3.0 SP1 installed before you could even put 3.5 on, let alone the 3.5 SP1.

The thing is, I tried using the 2.0 SP1 installer with Vista and it said it wasn't supported - same goes for 3.0 SP1 installer. I thought 3.0 and 2.0 SP1 were included with Vista SP1 and the computer definitely has that installed.

I had the exact same problem and I've tried numerous things to fix it... I failed.

In the end, due to an unrelated something I had to format and reinstall Windows. After I did that, everything installed just fine.

(I realize formatting is probably not the best way to solve this error lol, just saying that that was the only thing that helped with me...)

Well, I'm not prepared to format install Windows lol, I got this PC for him as a birthday present and I spent all night setting it up lol

Anyone else with any other ideas?

This might be a bit of an out there suggestion, but maybe worth trying. Why not go to Windows Update and update everything that way. All the service packs will be listed as things that need to be installed, that way you don't have to worry about downloading individual packages, let Windows take care of that for you.

Then, once that is done, try installing Visual Studio again.

I have 15 updates to do, but one of them caught my eye - an application compatibility update!

This might solve the problem, fingers crossed!

I always find it is easier to get things like this from Windows Update, since it knows everything that is needed on the system before installing anything.

After an HDD format or I get a new comp (which means I reformat the HDD anyways) I always update everything after installing it and before I start configuring it

Which means right after I install windows, I install Office 2003 followed by SP3, then VS 2005 followed by SP1, then do every possible windows updates available and then I go into office and configure it followed by configuring VS 2005

Followed by an NTBackup or a ghost of the machine so you don't have to do all of that again
