Free Book
Want a free book? I have three I'm giving away. Unfortunately, you have to be in the United States to get them as it cost too much to send them internationally.
You can have one of these books if you promise to write a review within 30 days. This is not a review like in school where you state what the book talks about. Rather, it is a review on whether you believe it was a good book and should others buy it. As such, you don't necessarily have to read the entire book to do the review. The review will get submitted to Codeguru at:
http://extra.codeguru.com/AddReviews/AddReview.asp
The three books I have avaiable are:
The New School of Information Security
http://books.internet.com/books/0321502787
Sams Teach Yourself Visual Basic 2008 in 24 Hours
http://books.internet.com/books/0672329840
Embedded Programming with the Microsoft .NET Micro Framework
http://books.internet.com/books/0735623651
I also have a couple of older books:
Spring into PHP5
Spring into HTML and CSS
Take Back Your Life (an Outlook 2007 book)
If you want one of these, then respond to this thread stating which one you want (that way I know who was first). Then send me an email, bjones (< a-t >) Jupitermedia . com with your name and mailing address.
When you post your review, you'll want to send me an email. If reviews get submitted, then there is a very good chance I'll offer more books!
Brad!

And one more -
Geekonomics: The real cost of insecure software

((If you've requested a book to review in the past and didn't turn in the review, then don't bother to ask for a new one ))

Re: Free Book
I think I'd like to try my hand at "Sams Teach Yourself Visual Basic 2008 in 24 Hours"
I think I could bring an interesting perspective as I have a very extensive background in Vb6 and earlier, but am just now (over the past 12 months) getting into .NET

Re: Free Book
The "discussion forums" menu link from the page that you linked doesnt work. Neither does the cg header logo link. Booo!
I just wanted to see some previous entries to see how involved/in depth they were but they dont come up.
I got in via a direct link to the forums and then back
Its only a few short paragraphs? Thats easy to do. I can do one too if thats the case. What happens if it doesnt get approved? Do you send a bill for the book?

http://extra.codeguru.com/ is the list of reviews
The forum link actually is working for me, but it is exceedingly slow right now.... (which is a different, bigger issue )
The image link being broken is interesting as if you go through the menus to the page, it is there. I'll have to look at that.
Yes, reviews can be short. The idea is to let others know if the book is worth while and worth the cost. I tell people to focus on the following types of information in a book review:
- Is this book timely? When was it published? Too early? Too late?
- Who is the information aimed at? Is this who the author says is the audience of the book? For example, an intermediate level book is bad if it contains beginner information.
- Who will get the most value from this book? Who will get the least value?
- Does the book seem accurate?
- Does the book seem too long or too short?
- Does the book seem priced right?
- Do you like the book? Why or why not?
- If there is a CD or Web site, is it valuable? Does it do what the book promises?
- Do you recommend this book to others?
There is no real value in telling what is in the Table of Contents for a book - people can simply look at the TOC online. The above helps people make a good decision on whether they should buy the book.
I use the honor system with reviews. If you take the book, I assume you'll do the review and submit it at some point. If you don't, and if I remember, then you simply won't ever do another review for us. If too many people bail on reviews, then we won't offer review books anymore. You'll notice that I'm offering them here instead of on Codeguru. Too many people there didn't come through, so you guys are getting your chance. If lots reviews happen, then I'll have more books to offer for reviews!
But - to do a review, you need to do BOTH - specify the book you want to review here AND send me a mailing address to send the book to! Right now, nobody has done both.
Brad!

Re: Free Book
Thanks for the reply but I was more meaning like if the review didnt get appoved.
I have free time now as I finished those two large projects just this week.
*waiting for the huge paychecks *
Seeing how Hack already asked about the Sams 24 hour book, if he doesnt have the time or ??? I could do it fairly quickly. The book is inexpensive (as all sams books are) but I do have the time for the next several months (unless I feel like doing more work ).
Ps, if not then I could write a review anyways (more then 5 sentences like another one I found by someone as I can get the book.

I meant to immediately after I posted, but got side tracked and then forgot to send it.

Re: Free Book
I had two copies of the VB 2008 in 24 Hours, so I'll send one to Rob and one to Hack.
I just looked at the SPring into... books. They are actually older (2005), so they aren't worth sending out. That leaves the Embedded book, the security book, and the Geekonomics book if anyone is interested.

Any issue with Rob and I collaborating on the review, or would you prefer it be done by just one person?
