    Car & Bus Collision

This happened while I was going to work. I usually don't take pictures when I see something like this, but this time I did because I just could not understand how the car could get there.... there is no reason for the car to make a left turn in the middle of the street... and how did the bus managed to push the car that far into the tree because the bus should not have a lot of speed there because the bus just made a left turn(Edit Correction: right turn) from the perpendicular street just a few feet from the accident...

(There is another picture I took, but it's not very clear, see the attachment)

    Re: Car & Bus Collision

MAss + Speed = Momentum .... Given that the Bus has more mass than the car (which looks like a Honda Civic ?) ... It's not that unconceivable that it pushed the car. Also noted was that the care looks simply to be pinned, not smashed against the tree. But it's been a while since I took physics too, so I could be way off.

Nah, you're dead on. Newton's first law. The bus had a bit of speed and a lot of mass, therefore it had a lot of momentum. It was in motion, and it wanted to stay in motion. The car was attempting to stop that motion. It lost.

    Yea, your right....

If you look at the picture file names, you will see that I took the pictures at 6:59 AM and 7:00 AM

I wake up at ~ 6:00 AM, leave home at 6:30, travel for 2 hours, work for 8.5 hours, leave work at 5:00 PM, travel again for 2 hours, and I arrive home at 7:00 PM....

Yea... I know... I need a new job...

    Re: Car & Bus Collision

Is there a parking lot entrance being hidden by the bus? I don't understand how the car could get in front of the bus if it was at the intersection. Perhaps he was trying to make a U-turn in front of the bus.

The only other thought that comes to mind is the car may have been in a different position on initial contact but got slid around to that direction.

    Re: Car & Bus Collision

No, the bus does not block any entrance...

There is an entrance to the parking lot, but it is quite far from where the car is, so I don't see why would he make a left turn there

So, as you said, either a U turn, or the car was in a diferent position and the bus turned it around when they collided.

    Re: Car & Bus Collision

After looking at it some more.... I don't think the bus was turning... I think it was heading straight... the car turned in front of it - either the driver is blind, mental, or thought they had enough time to turn left infront of the bus. Clearly that was not the case.

I took the pictures with my Phone camera, it's a KRZR K1, with 2 MegaPixels while the bus was moving.

I was in the bus that was going the opposite way from the back of the bus. I don't know if there was a girl or guy in front of me, but I remember he/she is chinese (that explains the glasses)

Actually the street that you see at the back/left of the bus goes to the subway station (where I was going), all buses go and come there there.... there is no reason for the bus to cross the sreet straight. So the bus took a right turn from that street.

    The intersection looks like this:

Actually..... My job pays very low (compared to other programming jobs at my level), so I would rather get a new job than moving to a new place.
And I live in a Condo that I bought a few years ago (before I got this job), and I like the place, it's big & cheap and the area is nice, people are nice... etc...

OK, so the bus was turning right. I buy that.... so how the heck does it hit the car on the PASSENGER SIDE?

New theory: Car was in revers in the parking lot when the driver hit the gas, it jumps the curb, comes flying over the sidwalk, just happens to be at the same tiem the bus comes around the corner.... BAM!...

    Just a theory.

google was no help... My friend used to work in a office building right on the corner where a one way street meets a 2 way street, and people would be stupid and go the wrong way. There were crashes quite often and my friend had the corner office and always saw them and was the first to call the police to report them.

He finally installed a CCTV camera aimed at the street, and when there would be a crash, he went to the reception desk, burned a dvd of the crash, walked outside and handed it to the police. i will get some pics of it.

    Re: Car & Bus Collision

Perhaps (and this is just a theory) it was Neo in the car, when all of the sudden an agent took over the bus, and headed straight for him.

Seriously though: What SEEMS to be the best explanation is that the bus came over the intersection. (Heading straight, not turning) And I know that you said the bus was turning onto this road, but it's the only possible way I can see this to have happened. He carried on straight over the intersection, and either the Bus or the Car skipped a red light. SMACK! Pin.

the car was making a left hand turn right in front of the bus that was making a right hand turn and smashed into it. Not being able to stop the bus tried to get out of the way and steered to the right smashing into the tree

    Re: Car & Bus Collision

    Looks quite straightforward to me.

At 20mph, a bus (9 tons) can stop in less than its own length without skidding. At 30mph it takes about 1+1/2 bus lengths. So judging from the position and lack of skid marks, the bus was going between 20 to 25mph when the driver took evasive action.

If the bus had just turned right from the subway station, the front of the bus would have initially been on the "wrong" side of the road (so that the rear wheels would not mount the kerb during the turn).

Assuming the car driver was initially in the correct lane, the car driver has over-reacted and crossed to the wrong side. Why not just stop ??? - because he/she was speeding, not paying attention, and unable to steer properly (on a cellphone / putting on makeup / eating a fatburger).

If you've never driven a long vehicle, the next bit won't make sense at first, but when you are doing a 45 degrees (or more) turn, you have to spend 1/2 of your time looking in your side mirror, to make sure you're not crushing a cyclist / child against a railing / street sign etc. So by the time the bus driver has realised that the car driver has lost the plot and mounted the sidewalk (pavement to us Brits), it's too late to do anything other than try to straighten-up and hit the brakes.

Note the position of the bus front wheels - almost straight-on. The turn was almost finished when he/she did an emergency stop. You can't steer and do an emergency stop in a bus at the same time - no seatbelt to hold you back - you have to use the steering wheel to hold yourself back.

IT'S COMMON FOR CAR DRIVERS TO DELIBERATELY INITIALISE A MEDIOCRE ACCIDENT IN ORDER TO CLAIM INSURANCE, COMPENSATION, AND SOCIAL SECURITY. This is one reason why CCTV on buses is increasing.

Now that I've proved conclusively to any court on this planet that it was 100% the car driver's fault, and that the bus driver should receive $250,000 industrial injuries compensation (40% payable to myself), I'll get back to eating the mango chunks I bought from asda yesterday, and drinking my coffee (minus ants). Then I'll carry on painting the spare bedroom.

    Re: Car & Bus Collision

9 tonnes is a pretty conservative estimate for a rigid bus of that length. I would put it at at least 16T.

From the original post: the bus has just turned left on to this road. The angle of the offside front wheel appears to be either straight or slightly right, indicating that the driver has most likely at least started to take evasive action to avoid the car.

(Public transport vehicles here have driver's seatbelts fitted as standard.)

As to why the car is in that position: who knows? It doesn't really achieve anything to speculate; there could be a hundred reasons.

@ penegate: 8 to 10 tons (imperial) is a typical weight for a bus of that size (the depot is full of them) - although when fully loaded with passengers it can go up to 15 to 16 tons. Probably more if they're americans.

NYC Orion 7s are a nominal ~14 tonnes unloaded and ~19 tonnes GVWR (metric). These are probably close.

We've missed the fact that there may have been other cars/people involved in causing this scene. Now suppose some blind old lady walking a duck was crossing through the intersection when this car was racing through to try to beat a red light. The bus is beginning its turn when the car has to swerve to avoid hitting the duck and the old lady. It spins around 3 times and ends up sideways in front of the already turning bus and gets pinned against the tree. Seems like the most logical explanation to me.

    Re: Car & Bus Collision

Or maybe a UFO was on collision course with the car, and he/she tried to avoid it, and turned the weel to the left and hit the bus instead...

He/she had a split second decision to make... hit the UFO or hit the bus... it looks like he/she chose the bus....

This explanation sounds more plausible to me...

So you're saying that the odds of seeing a UFO are better than seeing a blind lady walking a duck. Certainly there are more UFO sightings than blind old duck walking lady sightings so I guess I would have to agree with you.

    Kid: Silence.
Me: "Do it again and you're banned from this bus"
    Kid: "I'm not bothered"
    Me: "Fair enough. You're banned"
    Kid: "How long for ?"
    Me: "FOREVER"

4 down, 6 to go. I'm well on my way to banning my target of 10 (minimum) by 16th July

An empty bus is a happy bus.
Twas thou who did bannish romeo from the city was not it?
My monkey wearing the fedora points and laughs at you.
