Re: Buying a Laptop
Lenovo and Asus make some of the best laptops in the industry (in my opinion at least). They always get great reviews so I'd say have him take a look at the offerings of both brands

Correct yourself, fool. Lenovo makes the toughest laptops in the industry. HP's (in my experience) hold up very well over time. Can't say much about anything else.

Can you drive a Panasonic into a wall at 35 mph and have it still be operating when it hits the ground?

Re: Buying a Laptop
I have an HP laptop (dv6265us)
I have to say, I have had little to no problems AT ALL with it. I run Vista Ultimate SP1, XP Pro SP2, and XP Media Center SP2 on it, and they all work just fine.
Was a little trouble finding the XP drivers (laptop came with Vista out of the box) but I did find them all eventually. Vista was no problem at all with drivers, and the laptop is actually performing noticeably faster with SP1 for Vista on it.
I have heard some negative stories about HP laptops too, sometimes its the luck of the one you pickup. Obviously there is not a 0% failure rate on any product.
I've said it before, but Dells seem to be the most common laptop I get in to my repair shop for service, although Dells sells a buttload of laptops, so its hard to gauge an accurate repair rate because I don't know the amount of laptops sold by these companies.
One thing I will advise (which my laptop is lacking) is if you plan to run Vista (or do anything with 3d like games, or CAD) then try to get a laptop that comes with its own video card and video memory. Otherwise you usually get an nVidia or Intel on board graphics controller, which uses the systems RAM for Video memory. This results in less system memory for the OS, and decreased performance because the onboard video controllers are never as good as the standalone ones.

But those are also bulky. They look like freaking briefcases all by themselves. Lenovo's computers look damned nice, and they have a video on their site of them doing the crash test. Monitor frame snapped out, the whole computer flexed, but it was still running when it hit the ground.

Re: Buying a Laptop
All Lenovo computers look similar, they're all sleek and mostly black.. I think some have chrome top covers... but they're all that tough. Check out their site. The videos are pretty awesome.

Possibly. The toughbooks are some of the toughest laptops you can buy (our Military uses them).
Lenovo, while high quality, are not typically made to survive impacts but a toughbook was created to do such.

Anything.... that can run Windows. Visual Studio isn't exactly a big deal to run. Just get a little extra ram so you can keep everything open

I had a Centrino Duo with three gigs of ram... it ran everything I needed without even thinking about it.

Re: Buying a Laptop
yes get a core 2 duo CPU from intel... don't get an AMD, intel just has a better product in the market at the moment.

Re: Buying a Laptop
I have yet to use a dual-core AMD proc... but if the dual cores are anywhere near as good as the single cores, then IMO, they'll smoke the stuffing out of Intel.

Re: Buying a Laptop
AMDs dual core CPUs right now are way behind intels.
AMD did have a better product out for a while near the end of the P4 cycle, and even with the pentium D series (which were just 2 P4 cores smushed together on a single chip).
The core 2 duo though is a different animal, and way better than AMDs offerings right now.

Re: Buying a Laptop
AMD's latest processors (the quad cores) are quite awesome but Intel still beats them with their top of the line.
I know, it sucks. I was practically an AMD fanboy and now I'm using Intel CPUs
I hope AMD comes back!

Re: Buying a Laptop
I like whichever gives me the best bang for the buck. I tend not to be a fan boy to any hardware, simply because they change the lead position too often. It is not fair to count one out at the moment. The same thing really goes for ATI and nVidia (and of course ATI is now owned by AMD).
Whichever has the better card for the price that does what I want, is the one I would buy.
I read reviews on the individual products, not the companies prior track record (but of course that can come into play in certain decision making).
