Ok to be safe open the database in Access 2000, will do a small amount of conversion. Problem then being 97 will not recognise the database, and generate an error.

We have recent upgraded to 2000, and have gone through this process with our debtor and sales databases. No problems with DAO access, (excuse pun) from within a vb5 project.

If your users do not need to view the mdb in Access, but will only utilise it using the vb exe you don't have a problem, the vb5 code doesn't bootup access, although you may have problems with the dlls being viewed as older than those currently on the system when installing, if this is the case go through the conversion process.

Note, Access 2000 mdbs can be up to 2 gig in size as opposed to 97's 1 gig max.

Ok if you had any of the MS Office 4, (the release just prior to 97), documents/mdbs/xls etc and opened them in 97 then you would get a message asking if you wished to convert the file to the new 97 format. Access 2000 does a similar thing to a 97 mdb, but be warned it appears to do a few things regardless if you agree or not. We have just finished this process with all our mdb and so didn't care about it.

Basically conversion in MS Office is reformating the file to match what Office 2000 wants to see,
