I think XBox will be a vehicle for Microsoft to deploy 'Net appliances. Using this, WebTV, and CE, I think Microsoft would be a rampant as paper in less than 20 years.
Improve technology? What in the hell do you think Linux is? Fun? It is a much better OS and any Windows. It has true, pre-emptive multitasking, better memory management, better process management, better networking capabilities, can be ported to any electrical device capable of adding, need I go on?
MS has systematically sought to destroy any advance in technology. They have innovated nothing, are famous for their "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" approach, and have acknowledged that Linux (Unix and BSD) are better OSes (and that the Intel has been until recently slower than the Motorola), but feel that they can survive since their product is much more user friendly.
I'm sorry if we don't make Linux User Friendly enough. We are more concerned with making it work. If we had all the reasources that MS has, well, we would make it easy enough for even the stupid people.
Just a few days ago I came across this little gem...
I wanted to uninstall IE on this W2K box. Guess what... you can't! IE is part of the OS, you can't pull it out of the machine. You can't uninstall IE 5. If you have installed 5.5, you can back down, but you can't ever remove IE from W2K.
Now why in the hell would that ever make sense? The only reason it makes sense is for a cheap tactic to try and force your browser into the market. There is no rational reason to tie a stand alone software product to an operating system.
Until MS users do something to improve technology, I'm just going to use Windows as an overglorified game console.
xbox is cool, I'm gonna get it the first day it comes out. Its not a computer, its a game console, thats going to be a lot better then Sony, and Nintendo.

I do beleive I said technology not OS'. Linux has strived improved itself, nothing else. Microsoft has continued to do things to help the internet become more powerful and more useful. I have yet to see anything Linux has done to improve it except claim that web sites on Linux or more stable and secure. Microsoft has strived to make Hand held technology better. Microsoft is trying to make it possible for programmers to program with their products for other OS'. Microsoft has continued to improve their so called 'crappy browser' to keep up with standards. Actually that one is unfair becuase Opera is doing very well in this too but they are still a bit behind. Microsoft has strived to improve technology for the handicapped to be able to use a computer something I am adimant about since I am partially handicapped myself. Microsoft is doing many things to make our lives easier.
Just so the thought of Net Appliance doesnt stick to X-Box...
X-Box will Not have any Internet Browsing capability. Microsoft has no plans to even develop a browser for it. Its Net access will be strictly for Online gaming.
And since the demise of the Dreamcast (sigh!) Sega will be making games for the X-Box. Now the DC was based on windows CE and look at the job sega did with games! Amazing....Just wait till they have the full power of the x-box and its Game OS (yes it is windows..but Completely stripped down..boot in less the 10 secs) The list of Developers is absolutely HUGE already!
and just think..any AWSOME game for the PC can be ported to the X-Box upgraded in quality and NEVER CRASH! (we hope)
The Only thing that concerns me is the heat. If they dont cool that thing well enough...Crash city!
My fingers are crossed though!
BYE BYE PS2!!

Its not just win2k that u cant uninstall ie on, its any ms os with (i think) version 4 or above of ie. And its a big part of the reason that ms has been in trouble with the us government and why they have ordered it to be split into 2 seperate companies.
Two ms botch-ups in two days. And this is not an unusual ratio.
As for linux, i was not impressed when i tried that. I got what was supposed to be the best linux edition (SuSE). First its stupid loaded Lilo wiped out my FAT32 and Fat16 paritions. Then i discovered that i had to run it in an unusable res coz it didt come with a driver for my graphics card (v3) despite it being the most popular card around at its time. And then theres the interface. I couldt even connect to the net without resorting to a CLI. If we are still going to use CLI's, we may as well go back to DOS coz that was a brillient OS.
So, personnaly, i think windows and linux are as bad as each other.
As for the origanal point of this thread tho, i hope the xbox woops ps2 coz sony are even worse. And it should do with a GeForce 3 and a P3 (bear in mind that these components power are multiplied about 3 times when put into a console)!! But dont forget the gamecube. Nintendo have never made a bad console in the 15 or so years they have been in the business.

They only wipe out partitions if you tell it to And there are Voodoo3 drivers, I downloaded them from 3dfx's website. They were pretty good and even had OpenGL support. You could even get source code for them!

Thry are only supposed to wipe out the partitions that you tell it too, but lilo is notorious for messing your hdd (i didt know this at the time, i only found out when i was tring to sort it out). And when i said there were no voodoo 3 drivers, what i ment, was that on the massive collection of 6 cd's that it came on, there were no v3 drivers and it was difficult to gety to them coz it was running it what i think was lowwer that 640 480 and it was unusable coz the command buttons and stuff on most of the forms were off the screen so it was literally unusable.
I know there are plently of people out there that love linux and plently that love windows but frankly i think they are both as bad as each other!
