What is equally as impressive is that they actually made a targeted deadline.

Re: VS2008 to be released at End of Month
Well it should have been done earlier in 2007 but they changed the name to VS 2008 to make it look like its an early release.
They seemed to have learned from the release of Office as they released it in October 2003 and still called it Office 2003. They got allot of slack for that as everyone was complaining that it should have been Office 2004.

Considering how long it took this place to get in 2005, I suspect MS will be out with 2011 before we get 2008.

Just got off the phone. Starting on 12/3/07 I will officially be a full-time .NET developer!! WOOHOO!! $15k raise and quarterly profit sharing. I am seriously STOKED!
Anyway, more on topic. After speaking with my new boss, all new projects will be written against .NET 3.5. Unless of course, there's a compelling reason not to. Guess I finally need to bone up on LINQ.

Re: VS2008 to be released at End of Month
Only if you plan to wait for .NET 4.0......
despite the naysayers above, I'm all over this release... I might even end up using on the project I'm currently working on... and here at the office, I know we're planning to migrate to 2008 early next year.

If you can get to the download page you mean.... it's been dogging all days since it was posted (quietly initially I noticed).
I'll be checking it out at home overnight that's for sure.

I love how you can create a .NET 2.0 project and use the 2008 IDE, that makes it all worth while since I can't move any of my commercial apps to 3.5 anytime soon.

I read that they were planning on an option for targetting 1.1 as well. Did that feature eventuate?

If I remember right... VS2008 can target FW1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5!
I'll see if I can find where I read that at.

no only 2.0, 3.0, 3.5
at least those are my options when I installed it last night.
Unless it gives you 1.0 and 1.1 options if you already have VS 2002 and 2003 installed, which is unlikely...

Re: VS2008 to be released at End of Month
We still target 1.1 at the office, though I target 2.0 for home projects, and I have the best subscription, which is sweet. I can download just to evaluate, but I'm not sure that I have a good reason to do so, yet.
There are some performance and profiling tools and features in 2008 which look really nice. Will they work on apps built against 2.0?

Also, when you target a particular framework it will provide validation of code in the IDE as you work so as to make sure you write compatible code for that targetted fw version.

I think shaggy is asking if some of the IDEs features for 2008 will work when back targetting frameworks, and my answer is "I don't know right now"
I haven't had enough time to mess around because I have too many projects on my plate

Oh, good point. Didnt think of it that way.
Anything in particular? Its hard to know what feature may be fw version specific but dont see what would.

Re: VS2008 to be released at End of Month
I would assume that features new to framework >2 would not be available, but performance measures and profilers may or may not fall into that category. If they require additions to the IL.....well, it seems likely that they would work with any targeted framework, but I guess time will tell soon enough.

Took less than 2 hours to down load the whole package and verify the file....
Cable modem... avg speed in excess of 1000KB/sec .... topped out somewhere near 1700. For a short while I was worried, originally I tried going over the wireless.... at 12+hours, I decided that wasn't worth the effort. Switched to a hard line, I really gotta do that more often.
