Resolved [RESOLVED] Firefox can't access site IE will

I've just set up my new computer OS = XP pro - installed .net, iis, websites etc.

when trying to view http://localhost/.... with firefox I'm prompted for username and password with popup dialog "authentication required".

Internet explorer 7 is not doing this.

It's the same dialog that iis displays when you disable anonymous access, but this doesn't make any since IE works. I disabled windows firewall etc with no joy.

It appears IE has been granted rights to IIS/virtual directory but firefox has not?!@#$%^&*

Anyone have an idea what is causing this?

IE han't been "granted rights"; IE has integrated security. So IE is passing your credentials through silently, while Firefox is more explicit with its authentication.

Thanks mendhak - pardon my ignorance but what will allow firefox to access iis or localhost. If I disable integrated windows security for the site in iis firefox can "sometimes" access it but ie can't.

Enable anonymous access. Disable all other authentication mechanisms in that option box for your virtual directory in IIS.

If you then experience inconsistencies, then there's some other problem. Check Event Viewer (start>run>eventvwr) for any event logs related to your inconsistencies.

    Thanks mendhak.

xp pro was not showing the "security" tab for folder properties so I couldn't set the appropiate permissions until I made xp show it (in windows explorer click tools - folder options....).

It was all routine just didn't know how to set permissions when they where not visable - by default xp pro does not show the security tab? - win servers do... Why this was not imediately apparent to me I don't know...

Servers are meant to be configurable and essentially operating systems without all the eye candy. Hence it's less intuitive for us "real" developers.
