As long as you're careful what you download it's all good. A firewall is is better in my opinion. Prevention is better than the remedy

None and have one system that has been running fine for ~4-5 years. Mostly just need to use common sense. The AV game is a conspiracy.

I tend to agree with that...

My theory is: The AV developers get someone to write a virus, so they can create the definition for it. Ingenious idea actually...

It may be your theory but I've heard the rumors.

Either that, or once in a while, the AV program just tells you that it found a virus even if it hasn't.

I use Microsoft OneCare - because its cheap and doesn't seem to slow down my computer like other AV programs do. The GUI on it is also pretty good. Other AV programs barf up unbelievable amounts of crap on their screens and it gives me a headache.

I have AVG installed in windows, but I've disabled the resident shield... and I don't use it much... So I'm sort of bordering between AVG and no install

Could be, they always say that they couldn't exactly trace where it came from. It might have been their own labs.

Re: What Anti-Virus software do you use?

    I use Norton AV 2005.

I get this annoying message everytime I start my PC though, it says "Norton AV doesn't support the repair feature. Please uninstall and re-install" (It's a Windows Installer message)

Any idea how to get rid of that without getting rid of the AV?

p.s. Uninstalling and re-installing does nothing, I still get the message.

Re: What Anti-Virus software do you use?

I had similar problems with Norton (tho for me it was when any Office program started).

The support articles all say to uninstall/reinstall, and I couldn't find an alternative suggestion.. as my subscription had just expired I tried out AVG instead, and as it made my computer noticeably faster I kept using it!

I use Avast. Low memory usage, really good protection. I must say, i was somewhat shocked to not see it on the list...

I get the error message alot. I get it when:

    - I finish downloading a file using my web browser (Maxthon)
    - When I start my computer
    - When I open office documents
    - When I do a file transfer on MSN Messenger

me too, really nice software, and free too. combine that with the comodo firewall, you literally can't pay money for a better firewall, and you are better protected than paying hundreds for name brands. sometimes i wonder how there can be any money in AV at all
if God killed everyone on earth in the flood of Noah, then he killed hundreds of millions of innocent lives. He could have saved all the good souls; he didn't though. Isn't condemning the souls of innocents, the work of the devil? Is Jesus the real God?

    That's annoying!

Apart from getting any software updates (if they are still available for that version), I don't know what else you could do to fix it.

Re: What Anti-Virus software do you use?

AVG . uses less resources than the majority of others out there.
Installed on 1.2Ghz PC with XP has little to no performance effect.

But bigger than viruses these days .. are malware.

Before using any protection software though, first you need to setup Windows XP properly. By Default it is wide open for attack, and prevention is always best.

    My PC and me are not bothered by it. You should've seen my laptop;
    now that was a nightmare

The boot time is about 20 sec + logon another 15 sec...

But yeah I do know what you mean
before I had installed anything on this pc it only took 4 blue bars to go across the screen for boot-up.

Common sense, secure network and by routing all net connections through a Linux proxy server.

No need to run AV or Firewall software on the PC's and they run very well too.
