play dvds on win 2000 (thinkpad 770)

i have an old imb think 770. i installed win 2000 on it. considering it had a dvd drive i tried to play a dvd off of it but it gives me an error saying i need a dvd playback software or a driver ( if it worked before win 2000). i tried to install windvd and power dvd but neither work. windvd just hangs during the downloading of the directx 9 . power dvd closes when the install shield is starting up
could this be that considering its only a p1 processor that its not compatible with the software? does anyone know any good software that i can use that will work with a processor that low and win 2000.

Try playing other media files types and see if it's crashing.
VLC media player is a nice alternative to windvd.
