Mr. Smith and his wife invite nine other couples to a party. Everyone who is invited shows up and as the party progresses people meet each other. When two people meet they may or may not shake hands. They do not, however, shake hands with themselves nor with the person they came with.

At the end of the party, Mr. Smith stands at the door asking each of the other guests (including Mrs. Smith) with how many people they shook hands. He notices that they all give different answers.

With how many people did Mrs. Smith shake hands with?

You have a glass sphere. There is a place in the centre of the sphere for a candle. There is enough air in the sphere to keep the candle going for 60 seconds.

You light the candle and drop the sphere off a tower. The sphere takes 60 seconds to hit the ground. Just before the sphere hits the ground, is the candle lighted.

Is the candle lit? Why not? there is no out air disturbing the flame. Maybe if the candle was upside down, it might go out

In that case, it's still lit, because you said 'just before' it hits the ground. Therefore, just before it runs out of air.

Took about two minutes. It's easier to start with the middle number. due to the clues it has to be a very high number so starting at 9, the others just fell into place

But because the sphere is falling - there is no convection, so the oxygen wont replace the carbon dioxide. So the candle had no oxygen to burn and hence it could go out.

Another alternitive is that through difusion the oxygen will get to the candle. So it will stay lit.

Guess we will just have to try it.

Candle, the sphere hits the ground first. Why? The candle is in the middle of the sphere, and we do not know how big the sphere is. As the outside of the sphere hits the ground breaking open the sphere, the candle roll away, therefore the candle nevers goes out, but the sphere does hit first.
Okay, I am adding this to my high school list.

Candles stay lit because the heat they produce causes the carbon dioxide, they produce, to rise. Oxygen fills the space and the cycle keeps going. However during freefall the carbon dioxide doesn't rise so the candle could go out.

I think it would go out when it has been cracked open - no candle could survice the blast

Since he got a different answer from everyone and there are 19 different possible answers (0 to 18) that must mean that he got every possible answer, and if Mrs. Smith shook hands with 18 people then nobody could give the 0 answer.

Indeed. And think about this; somebody shook hands 18 times, which means that there were 18 other people who all shook hands at least once. Which leaves very limited options as to who could have been the person to shake hands 0 times.
Then consider who shook hands 17 times.

i believe the sphere/candle riddle probably has something to do with how much air the sphere can hold at different altitudes.

e.g. the sphere contains 60 seconds of oxygen at X feet, but at a lower height the air pressure is greater so it will hold more oxygen (and hence whilst it's still alight)

the actual problem doesn't sound too well thought out though...
