its interesting that due to the nature of .NET 3.0, Microsoft is killing off .NET support in Windows 98-2000.

I am sure it was due to compatibility, but there are a lot of organizations still running 2000 desktops and servers.

However that being said, its pretty nice that finally a .NET framework will ship with an OS

Im just getting my hands on 2.0...
I am so tired of things changing so rapidly..
give the developers some time to actually become proficient in using and utilizing the tools that have been released. MS seems like a "hey its out on beta for 1 year..its been released for 3 months...and now we've gone to rev 2.". Im tired of that!

Bear in mind that this wasn't originally meant to be 3.0, it got renamed.

its basically a tie in of .NET 2.0, and the new features of vista (which MS plans to extend down to XP at some point from what I have read) which is why XP is the minimum requirement to run it.

Also, this is a pre-release tech preview of .NET 3.0, its not even a BETA, and its not an IDE.

For now think of it as them letting you take a sneak peak at what will be next. They aren't shoving it down your throat.. yet

Well its more of an extension to the 2.0 Framework. It supposedly consists of the core 2.0 dll's along with added on libraries and functionality, with the addition of the whole WinFX stuff (which was the name before). Things like the "Windows Presentation Foundation, Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Workflow Foundation, and Windows CardSpace (formerly code named "Infocard")" which are all new, and quoted from the page.

As far as the IDE thing goes, it says you should still be able to use it in 2005, although not sure to what extent.

I haven't heard of anything about a new IDE. As far as I know, everything I have read have been saying how you can use the same 2005 IDE. I mean it hasn't been long since 2005 came out, and requiring a whole new IDE for it would seem like it would be harmful to the reputation and product, and would make lots of people angry who just shelled out the money for Visual Studio 2005...

yeah.. especially since the IDE itself is getting a service pack pretty soon. I wonder if the service pack will have anything .NET 3.0 related? Maybe get the IDE ready to handle multiple frameworks

Yeah, I read on one of the MSDN blogs that there will be some feature released that allows targeting framework 1.1 as well as 2.0. Not sure if this will be part of the SP or as a downloadable patch.

Seems like it would make good business sense and good PR to update the "engine" of the 05 IDE instead of trying to push out a new IDE to go with 3.0.

I wouldnt worry about a new IDE for a long time still.

Noone's saying that you have to use it. People are still developing apps with VS.NET 2002.

As for a new IDE, the name Orcas has been bandied about for ages but, given the state of VS 2005 when it was released, I don't think MS will be eager to release another under-cooked IDE. I don't think VS 2005 was originally intended
to support .NET 3.0, just like VS.NET 2003 doesn't support .NET 2.0, but the fact that it does now suggests to me that Orcas is some way off. I think it was originally supposed to arrive with Vista, nee Longhorn, but they've realised that that is a pipe dream and decided to add .NET 3.0 support to Whidbey instead and ease the pressure a little on the Orcas team. The fact that features have been removed from Vista makes Orcas less important.

Is it compatible with VS2005 SP1 Beta ? Seem like it only work for VS2005 RTM.

from what i have seen on MSDN TV it will include many new additions.
So we will have to learn again a bunch of things.
Also the Windows SDK will be published that is supposed to include all Windows APIs
in a .NET SDK.

I followed a link someone else provided the other day and it led to a help topic for the System.Windows.Controls.Label class that inherited from the System.Windows.UIElement class. Seems System.Windows.Forms is to go the way of the Dodo for one thing.
