Politicians try to ban violent video games.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060826/...na_video_games

I know this bill is aimed at minors, but still banning all violence from all media would really ... make these kids violent. Even though they are minors, they still have certain rights. Its up to the parents, not the government.

This is just another example of a jerk trying to force other people to do what HE/SHE believes is right.

    Guess what Governor Kathleen Blanco?

You're in the exact same camp as the communists, the bible-thumpers, the whacko Islamic terrorists. Congratulations.

A state law that would ban sales of violent video games to minors violates free speech rights and cannot be enforced, a judge ruled
    ...
"Depictions of violence are entitled to full constitutional protection," Brady wrote Thursday.

I missed where they were trying to remove violence from all media.

Anyways, it would seem that certain levels of realistic portrayals of violence in games should be restricted from minors, similar to how movies, per their ratings, restrict their accessability to not yet of legal age individuals.

However, since it was a Dem. sponsored bill, I'm glad it was shot down.

Then they can finally ban such terrible things, as laser tag and baseball.

Games in the UK have the same rating system as movies. Surely it is then up to the individual stores and/or parents to ensure minors do not play them

That rating system is in the States as well.

But this law was trying to go beyond that and outright ban games a common person who describe as depicting morbid violence.

Which in this day of UPS and FedEx would have made no effect.

I still am not seeing this "outright ban".

The law sought to ban the sales of video games to minors if an "average person" would conclude that they appeal to a "morbid interest in violence." Sellers would face fines of up to $2,000, a year in prison or both for selling offending games.

The law also sought to ban sale of games to minors if the average person would conclude they depict violence that is "patently offensive" to an adult, and the games lack artistic, political or scientific value.

Its an outright ban - to minors.

Just like cigarettes and alcohol are outright banned from being sold to minors.

    outright : Complete; total.

not an outright ban, only with games expressing a "morbid interest in violence."

But then it IS an outright ban...To Minors...on games that express a "morbid interest in violence."

It is an infringement on their constitutional rights, and that is wrong!
They should be allowed to sit down, drink a few beers, smoke cigars, play these excessively violent and morbid games, while rated X movies are playing in the background without any legal consequences to any and all distributers!

all these kids today need to learn DOS, then they might just appreciate even the simplest things like MS Word on Windows XP ... heck they'd then just be happy to see something other than monochrome!

Bey kids so spoiled these days .. we used to have to fight in the real world with machetes, rocks, bottles, and the odd coconut .. to see some blood .. now its all in these games ..

Yeah and when a kid or another moron turns up in a school shooting innocent kids, you can always go complain the government is not doing enough
