    Starting a business

What do you think of the idea of starting a business writing programs for small and medium-sized businesses? Since I have the ability to write programs in VB.NET and the corporate world is already being served by a surplus of software and consulting firms I could put my skills to work by targeting businesses that up to now have only used off-the-shelf software (or no software). I was thinking of charging very low rates for this service. Any ideas on this?

It'd be a dead end. If you don't believe me, go to ebay and check the apps offered for a dollar. From pig breeding to calculating meal kcals. If you use sites to offer your software you'll end up with ~10% for you. Handango.com is the typical example. They never talk about how they charge VAT to make it "easier" for you (but deducting it from you AFTER they have take their share etc).

Maybe the best approach is presenting yourself by writing personal letters to companies but I doubt it'd have much success.

Actually, companies don't mind high prices, they see it as a nice tax exemption.

The only theoretical way to succeed is to have a really revolutionary idea. I've read somewhere, that the today's languages are so easy, they make anything possible. The question is what anything.

This is not a question for the VB.NET forum.

Anyway, it's not a dead end if you can write some useful software. The company I work for actually sells some Web Applications for a quite a lot.

I was actually planning on starting my own business but I've since found a good job so I don't really have any plans to continue persuit.
