Do you really need to use ODBC or could you use DAO or ADO instead?

I am trying to open a ODBC-MS Access database from VB .I am pretty new in programming. How can I open it and also it would be a great help if some one could tell me how to get the fields from the database.I used the SET property but didn't work the way I wanted.
Thanx
