Poll: Should you always have the latest update on every program you have?
Everyday someone release an update for x. Weither it be an important upgrade or a fix to a typo.
I say no, because of the simple fact that programs such as Apache and PHP, don't do to well to upgrades.
Apache: Say you have your Apache 1.3 installation all happy and installed with 5 modules. Why should you upgrade to Apache 2? Because your Apache 1.3 modules won't work with Apache 2. So if you really want to upgrade to Apache 2 you have to modules that were created for Apache 2. Waste of time IMHO.
PHP: Some (not all or most) older scripts won't work right on PHP 5. So, why upgrade to PHP 5 when your PHP 4 install is happy and working properly?
Again with this poll, if you vote please say why you vote that way.

There is a big difference between updates and upgrades.... you say updates in the poll, then mention upgrades in your explanation. These are two different things. Upgrades generally mean large changes in design, functionality, etc... Updates are generally bug fixes, and minor changes to already-existing versions...

I'd say no here as well, although i would also love to click "stop posting polls"
I have to agree, compatability issues arise, and if a program is how you like it (like MSNM 6.2 was) then why should you have to upgrade ?

You are confusing upgrades and updates.
For a very clean cut example, look at vBulletin, the forum software that we run here. Jelsoft continues to release updates to the vBulletin 2.x and 3.0.x families even now that 3.5.x is out. For a board to move from 3.0 to 3.5 (as I guess we will someday) would be an upgrade. For us to patch up to 3.0.12 as we recently did, would be an update. It is essential that you run the latest updates so that you have maximum security and are not affected by bugs that have already been fixed. It is however not essential that you run the latest branch of the product, in this case 3.5 - we're still running 3.0 here.
