Netscape
When I was little people either used IE or the alternative was Netscape. While IE still dominates the mass market Netscape seems to have fallen by dramatically as its rival, with a vast majority choosing Mozilla based products instead. Why is this so?

Re: Netscape
Netscape is based off the same engine as Mozilla.. Netscape accepted defeat and stopped updating their browser, so people moved onto Mozilla.

Re: Netscape
They didn't earn money on it anymore, since IE went free. And since MS had other incomes, they could live on, but Netscape lost all their developers to paying jobs..

Re: Netscape
Just found Netscape to be quite hard to use but Mozilla (esp. Fx) has been designed more ergonomically

Re: Netscape
There not developing it as such.. they just base it off Mozilla 1.8 I think?... and they were going to allow you to switch between the Gecko render and IE's render'er, making for bloatware imo.... so I dunno, a few changes to Mozilla and you've got Netscape, doesn't take that many coders to achieve it
Originally they were in charge of developing Gecko as well, but they gave that back (didn't they buy it originally?) the community when they lost the browser wars.

Re: Netscape
Mozilla is based on Netscape. The Mozilla was formed when Netscape released its code base to the open source community.

Re: Netscape
Netscape history in points
1) Netscape hits the scene
2) IE bundled with Windows
3) Netscape slacks off on new web technologies
4) Developers start using the Best viewed in IE images on their websites
5) Netscape share drops significantly.
6) Netscape tries to come back to the forefront and play catch up but releases nothing but very buggy and crashy version
7) Mozilla comes into play after Netscape throws in the towel of sorts
8) Firefox spring from Mozilla to release an unbloated and fast standalone browser after complaints of Mozilla's speed.
9) ???
10) Profit
