    RE: The Size of Oracle

    Well boys and girls..

I have finally upgraded to Oracle 10g enterprise system, Enterprise manager, Application server, Web Server and Developer.

Adn it promtly, took me 17 hours collectively to upgrade these adn set up, and its collectively over 5GB in size alone, and takes 276MB each database, when not using Automated Storrage Mamager (ASM)

And tages a virtual paging file of 1700mb just to install fo rthe minimum reuquirements....

    WOW

For those who are forseeing the opportunities of installing this system, pay attention to teh amount of aministrative work there is involved on teh DBA side, and how much work is involve in desaigning and deploying databases, as its not even that easy.

I can see now why SQL server is the choice databse as the GUI is totally out there when if comes to ease of use, 10G however, you have to have a damn good understanding of SQL to deploy and create tables.

Hard work nonetheless, but worth it!!!

    Lovely system and BIIIGGG!!!!!!

    Enjoy

    Well...

    That's a very "odd" assessment.

Do you like it? Do you think it was over-the-top difficult to install?

MS SQL Server is so easy to install - we drop it on laptops and servers all the time. Effortless installation - effortless implementation.

    Re: The Size of Oracle

    Hi,

Yeah loved it, but thats a bit of a byast opinion as Ive always loved oracel cluster and the DBMS itself for development and capability.. But 10g is a massive system, way bigger than 8 or 9ii, i mean its twice the size.

If youhavent got enterprise manager installed its a bugger to use, but using enterprise manager its a doddle. (well compared to oracle normally..)

I do agree with your that SQL server beats oracel hand down for useability in its user interface, as you can simply drop if into any sort of workstation, server or any type of workstation and itll adpat run and work. Its the best dtabase system for all by far, including home use..

But for major development, I love oracle adn always will. Im a classic coder that looks adn goes way beyond the GUI and nice interfaces..

    Your opinions on Oracle??

Never used Oracle myself - have received output from Oracle to process and had requests to DBA's to get data - mostly in the mainframey world 10 years ago...

I've been involved with SQL since the SyBase/Rally RDBMS days of the late 80's - so GUI's give me no comfort. We actually script all our SQL as text files so that it's repeatable and trackable.

EM is nice for the IT manager - and for a quick look at data.

When you say "ENTERPRISE MANAGER" do you mean that you use MS EM to administer ORACLE?

    Re: The Size of Oracle

    No not the MS EM...

the actual oracle enterprise manager and application manager.

Its quite good, it actually designs the tablespace for you, mounts the table on the cluster and configures the ASM for storage under 256MB per database instance...
stil ahve to work using the SQL plus interface, but its a hell of alot easier than plying around with "CREATE table" and MOUNT table then defining the TABLESPACE adn all that. Save loads of time, but stil preferr the old commands...
