ASP vs. PHP
Hi,
I have this to do for a Friend/Client with no Idea Where to Start. He wants to Sell all His Old Collectors Item Cards on the Net on his Own Web-Site without Using ebay, etc.
So He Wants a Web-Site, which the Space must be Provided Free Like 50 MB Account which one can Find on The Net. Then The Products will have Screenshots, The Price of the Item, etc. There Will be Payment Options Since some of the Cards are Expensive.(say Credit Cards, Mastercards, etc)
The Web-Space Does Allow SQL for the Db, which will store the Products, Prices, Customers and The Items Bought. After a Successfull Transaction the Email Must be Sent to The Customer.
I Havent Ever Done This, Is This Even Possible, If I Use ASP Instead of PHP Will the Client Need to Pay Some Licence, Also To Have the Credit Card Feature Does the Cleint Pay Some Sorta Amount.
What Will The Credit Card Companies Send me To Verify the Bank Account has been Paid by the Client?
Do we Need a Special Dediacted Server to do all this processing, where we host a box which has the DB and email Program that gives customers notification?
I need to Startup on this by the Weekend, Please Give me Links/Suggestions to get going. I Have Studied ASP, VBscript, Shopping Cards, but nothing with Actual Money Matters in it.
Thanks

Re: ASP vs. PHP
For credit card transactions, you will need to use APIs provided from companies like Verisign (check out verisign's merchant services), and pay a fee for that too.
Some providers to allow you to use ASP for free, but to use SQL server will cost you money too, as that requires licensing. You'd end up having to use MS Access if you want the db part to cost you nothing as well.

Also, the more secure you want the transaction to be, the more money it is going to cost for that security. If you are dealing with credit card numbers you will need to have the most security available, and I would definately state exactly what kind of security you are using. I will not, under any circumstances, put my credit card number on any site unless I know exactly what kind of security they are using.
Tell your friend this is going to be much cheaper for him if he uses eBay.

That's true. Web users are more 'informed' these days, and they wouldn't trust a subdomain as much as a domain. Know what I mean? www32.brinkster.com/abc23 isn't as trustworthy as www.scentedcandlesworldwide.com (In addition to the reasons hack gave)

This is a huge undertaking esp. for 1 person esp. esp. for a n00b. You will dump hordes of time money and effort into this trying by yourself. Good Luck!
P.S. You guys should weigh the cost of doing this yourself vs. the cost of paying ebay. Dollars to doughnuts, ebay will be cheaper. my .02

[SIZE=1]Theres no way in Hell that youre going to develop a shopping cart, checkout and small temporary commerce system in ASP if your a noob.!!
sorry mate, but face facts. the time, money and resources into doing this is alot on the experienced developer (£4000 min for my company to do one...)
so Id cut your losses and use ebay (as much as I hate it!!!) youll get a much quicker trunaround and less hassle (well in theory as this IS friggin ebay were tallking about...) and will cost you peanuts..
my 10p (20eur for those not so clsoe to home...) there

Though the Fact that This Project is Mission Impossible 4 is starting to Blend in.

It isn't impossible, but it is not going to be easy or cheap.

Re: ASP vs. PHP
Here are things I am still not sure of:
Question 1: If I Use SQL Server I Pay a Licence Just as I would If a Company uses Windows XP for Example. Do I Pay Some Sort of Licence Every Year If I Decide to Use ASP For a Web-Site?
Just for Experimentation I Decided to use ASP For My Friends Web-Site, he isnt so Serious About it Being done Right Now so I Get A Chance to Learn Abit.
I Checked Out the Links You Guys Submitted and Decided on This One I Found Which is Local:
http://www.paradigmsolutions.co.za/s...sp?ServiceID=1
Question 2: Using Paypal, they Would do the Payment Processing, What Happens When A Transaction is Successfull, Do They Mail Me Then I can Give the Client The Confirmation Detail, Delevery, etc.
That Method is Manual, The Servers Features at ParadgimSolutions Has this:
#Email Forwarding
#Web Mail Support
#Catch-All E-mail
#Auto responders
Question 3: Are Auto responders the tools to configure to receive confirmations? Is this Where I Specify What to Do For Successfull Confirmation. I Want to Have a System where The Client Will receive the Details As Soon as he has a Successfull Transaction. I Doubt Paypal Can Handle This.
Last Question, Does ASP.net Require the Client Side Computer to Have the VB Framework to be Installed?
Thanks Again
