right click -> open with problem
There is a problem on my pc where say i have a text file if a right click -> open with -> choose fom list it opens it with notepad. How do i get it to show a list of programmes.

Open With> Choose Program.. should bring up a list.

After you have opened it once with a program, windows remember this and the next time it add that program to the list of "Open With..." programs.

i know but the problem is if i right click -> open with -> choose programme it's opens straight away in notepad, even if it's not compatable. It doesn't show me the list which is what i really need back, or i'll have to rebuild my computer.

Haha, don't reformat for this 
Worst case scenario, go to "Folder Options..." under "Tools" in any windows explorer window. Find the file type you are trying to open and change the "open with" there.
If you don't know what extension it is, under "view" in the same menu; you can uncheck hide extensions.
