    Laptop CPU FSB question

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knew if you could put a 533mhz fsb socket 478 cpu into a 400mhz fsb socket 478 laptop.

I have a gateway 600yg2 that supports the 400mhz fsb cpus. Currently has a 2.2 ghz cpu in it. Was looking on ebay and saw some 3.06ghz 533mhz fsb for pretty cheap and thought it would be a nice upgrade if my laptop would support it.

Was just wondering if it would not recognize the cpu if I tried it or if it would cause it to run slower.

    Thanks,

    Steven Hickerson

I am pretty sure you can...Just be sure to lower your FSB settings in BIOS..and it will only run at 400mhz instead opf 533

I think it would work (slower than on a 533 FSB of course), whether it'll phisically fit maybe/maybe not. The one thing that might cause a major problem is heat, Laptops run hot anyway, you stick a faster (and hotter) CPU in it might meltdown... Memory's a safer upgrade IMO

Yes possible but you will have to check with the motherboard manual for the FSB jumper settings on the board! and change the setting in the bios but usually the bios fsb setting will be set to "By Jumper" so just change the jumper as directed by your manual.
