    hey..how do i make a box like the first 1 below? and not have that colour around the edge of it?

    Then you probably cant. You can check www.vbaccelerator.com to see if there is a custom control available that can do that.

    Maybe not quite what you're after, but you can use three flat boxes layered to produce a similar effect

    How it looks is always going to depend on the user's theme. On mine everything looks kind of flat and layering boxes looks hideous, but on the standard Windows theme it looks completely different. If you're after a look consistent with the Windows style then stick with the default controls, otherwise, use your own custom controls or images to make it always look the way you want.
