This could be anything . It doesn't have to be a virus related problem .What's the OS ? for XP , this could be helpful to get rid of this annoying message . Right click on My Computer , Properties , Advanced , Error Reporting button , choose Disable error reporting and uncheck "But notify me when..." .

Did you try repairing IE ? even though , such problem is hardly fixed without reinstalling windows .This is my 3-year experience with win2k.

Re: Explorer Error - Memory could not be read...
Do you have any extra toolbars in IE? (eg: like the Google toolbar). If so, turning them off (or uninstalling them) may fix it.
There are several toolbars that aren't particularly well written, and can cause issues like this.

Re: Explorer Error - Memory could not be read...
It's IE5.5. I have just 4 toolbars - Standard Buttons, Address bar, Links, Radio. Of these only Standard Buttons and Address bar is turned on (visible).

Do a virus scan. If it's not a virus (and it probably isn't) you will need to reinstall/repair Win2K.
