RAM question

ok so i have compaq...the inside has 2 slots for RAM. its SDRAM, 256mb on one. and the other slot is empty, so would that mean that i would want to buy another slide of 256mb sdram, and slip it in the other slot...for a total of 516, or should i put a 128mb in, how much can my pc support ? - justin..

Did you check the motherboard manual? It should tell you for shure.

Normally, if the Motherboard already has a 256 installed it can accept atleast another 256

If you go to http://www.crucial.com and look up your computer and model number, they will tell you how much the computer will take (as long as you haven't upgraded the motherboard or anything). Then once you have your information you can go buy it somewhere or order from Crucial.... But Crucial's website should tell you everything you want to know!

how old is the motherboard? if its less than 3 years old, im pretty darn sure it can handle another 256..

And also, 256 + 256 = 512 not 516

Usually, you must use the same size in each slot. If you have 256, you should use another 256. If you have 128, you would want to buy 2x256 to upgrade, and get rid of the 128m stick. Same if you wanted 2 x 512 for a Gigabyte of RAM.

Please note that recent motherboards throw this concept out the window, i have a 512Mb stick sat alongside a 256Mb stick in this PC, and a 128Mb stick sat alongside a 512Mb stick in the other PC...Also, if you get a higher speed rated stick (i.e. PC3200 as a pose to PC2700) it will only operate on the slowest speed (in this case PC2700) that might be something to bear in mind.

this place has a feature where it will tell you how much memory your computer can handle. I use it all the time when I want to check something. Their memory prices are pretty good too. Ive never had any problems with them.

I just posted in case it wasn't a newer system. I've had bad experiences before, and don't want him to do the same.

The only thing that is relevant is his motherboard's support of RAM. It could be a newer system but SDRAM is old technology. DDR RAM is
newer. Still consult your mobo's website for the proper documentation (if you dont have your manual) and they can also, usually, have a listing of
supported manufacturers of RAM and the sizes.
