Can you please tell me how to pause a call that modem is calling?

do you mean while it is dialing the number?? Not exactly sure what you are asking, but a comma (,) in the numbers represents a slight pause.
For example, if you need to dial a 9, the pause, then the number then it would be 9,xxx-xxxx
Pretty basic, but not quite understanding what you are asking for.

There are two ways, one is having a special modem, and the other is having the service through your ISP and phone company. For a while they had modems that would automatically place the call on hold to answer another calll, but i haven't heard much about them for a while.
A few months ago, I noticed that AOL featured the same type thing, which interfaced with their voicemail option. You had caller id on screen and could answer a call while not losing your connection.
