is freeBSD unix or non-unix derived from Unix

    Hi,

I always tought that freeBSD is a Unix system. But a friend of mine say it is only derived from Unix, but it self is not Unix. What is correct? Matter of defenition. I state that freeBSD is a unix system.

It'd be on par with saying that Linux is Unix methinks

Soo freeBSD is NOT Unix but it is derived from Unix? It sound like saying Windows Xp are derived from Windows 2000 but Windows Xp are not Windows analogous freeBSD being derived from Unix is not Unix. Sometimes I am not thinking at all...just being logical.
