checking ip addresses

I'm working on a program that connects to different computers via ethernet. Type in the ip address to connect. Is there a way using a combo box I guess to poll or find out what devices are connected to the network and then the user would just pick the desired ip address?

perhaps you can check if an IP is alive by sending a Ping to it. If you receive an echo back, then it's online...
