Chat Client - looking for more people.

I am looking for more people to help with a chat program I am going to be working on. Buddy List, IM's, Chat's are basic features.

I can successfully do this on my own, so if there any beginners out there or advance people who would like to help and/or learn. Leave a message.


Also, artist will be needed since we will make it skinable.

The name of it will be ANTI-AIM, so a lot of will learn of it fast. It will be produced under my group www.po2.net but all credit will be given to everyone does work.


Other features will include away messages, logging, and a coin system for games such as trivia chats, and in the future after everything is done, have it set up for add-on games, where users can compete against each other.


Money may and should be available and will be split between all indivuals who help based on the % of work they complete if we get advertisors who want a small ad on the client.

This will be coded in VB6, using the winsock control.

Server will start off on VB6, winsock then later converted to something better.

So what will be the special feature of the program that will attract users? BTW, the ads wouldn't attract users since there are other chat programs that are add-free and are quite good...

at first it will just have buddy list, im's, profiles, then chat. Later will be added more stuff. Open to suggestions. Will add games later and some kind of point system that will reward users for participating in games or other such activities.

Hey. I've been programming in VB for a while now ( i think like 5 or 6 years). I've had some pretty good winsock experience also. About 1 month ago, I started working on something very similar to what your doing. I already have a server and a client. Right now, all the features work out really nicely. It has a username and password. The client user enters a user name and password. The information gets sent to the server and the server checks its database (yes a real ACCESS .mdb database) to see if everything is right. It then sends a message to the client telling it whether it was right or wrong. There is a buddy list. Still working on blocking users, showing who's online and who isn't, and stuff like that (it can all be done, i just don't have the time to do all of it on my own or the dedication - if you let me join this group or whatever i will be into it a lot). Resizing of forms and stuff like that has all been programmed. Working on getting a good encryption algorithm going also (privacy is important). Their is only one major problem that I have hit so far - it is file sending. The problem isn't file sending itself - its getting a direct connection to users - really hard with firewalls, routers and networks. I'm sure you're group and I (hopefully) working together can figure something out. I am willing to give all the source code to you and you can as you said put it in your groups name as long as I'm part of the project. I hate aim for a couple of miscellaneous reasons

1) 16 character limit on names (maybe a 24 or 26 limit would be better, not the ridiculous, seemingly-endless limit on MSN)
2) They endorse two spyware companies, WeatherBug and WildTangent
3) Damned audio ads that won't stop playing no matter how many times I mute the ad.
4) AIM Today window is a pain in the ass (especially if it doesn't stop showing up when you click "DON'T SHOW AIM TODAY AT START")
5) AOL is pure suckage anyhow. AIM somehow managed to stave off a good deal of its sucktitude, but now its catching up.
6) Not able to use symbols in names such as !@#$%^&*()_+=-~`;':",.<>/?
7) Not able to use letters from other languages (refer to alt code)


-Great voice chat (with filters, so you can transform your voice into like robot, old man, deep voice, micheal jackson, alien, etc)

-browsing-based chatroom option (so you get a unique chatroom for each site you're currently browsing... for example, if you're browsing google.com/whatever/whatever.html, you can see a list of people that are using the im program and who are browsing google.com and you can chat with them in a chat room. (i saw this somewhere, I think it was called gooey messenger)

-interactive games (not just ims)...kind of like yahoo, with chess and the doodler program

-profiles that are kind of like mini-webpages (of course, you'll have to limit it to a certain amount of characters, and only certain size of images, certain amount of pages, etc. , instead of the aim generic box of words.

-doesnt bug for updates, then update itself

-no advertisements

-personal chatrooms, like mirc (with admin/op/mod + topics options)

-scripting

-cell phone/text msg support (wap?)

-some kind of thing that people can put on sites/forums that gets info from the server to see if they're online and shows an icon (like y!m, if someone is online, the image is a yellow smiley face, not online=dulled)

-universal email support (like msn/aim to see if you have new emails/notify in the corner when you get a new email)

-others said game/program support, like you can program it so that other programs can connect with it for chatting.

-custom colors

-can connect to the server with more than one nick at once (limit to 2 or 3?)

-nick drop (like if you dont use your nick for a year, it gets dropped)
