    CPU usage skyrocketing

I start windows task manager, switch to the preformance tab to see how it's going. About 50%, 60%.. 70%...

Come to think of it, I'm not running anything. In fact, the computer isn't... doing ANYTHING except whatever it does behind the scenes.

Switch to process list, scan CPU column.

    Hmm a 98... what the...

Why the hell is my "System Idle Process" process using up so much CPU??

lol, that's a good thing. It's saying that X amout of the CPU is used by system idle process i.e. X % of the time the CPU's idle.

It's just there so you can quickly see how how 'stressed' the CPU is - in your case very little.

Well maybe that isn't the problem then. Just stood out.

Here's a picture of it graphing the usage. My PC has been running slow lately... I dunno..

He can read my mind. Fantastic.

I saw a good review in PC PRO for a process explorer (free). I'll see if I can find it and post the link. It will give you info on the owner of the process and the dll or exe to which it belongs.

You shouldn't run XP on a processor equal to 486.
