    Broadband in the UK

I need to upgrade my home line to broadband and was wondering if any of you guys could recommend anyone.

The problem I have is that where I live they haven't discovered the wheel yet so there is no cable, just a BT line.

Oh dear, cable is very good for the money (750 connection for £25-30 on TeleWest).

But.. anyone other than cable companies all use BT lines, so whoever you go with will give the same quality. All the big ISP's do different deals with it, so you're probably best just picking a provider/deal you like the sound of (AOL maybe? ).

    NOT NTL!

First they arrive late, spend 3 hours drilling the wrong size hole in your wall, break 3 bricks, overcharge you and then leave without any instructions on how to proceed.

    NTL Suck.

And when you finally get online the connection bombs out after 23 minutes 8 seconds. Calls to helpdesk 60p min!

    Allegedly.

8 bits in a byte, do the math

Megabits are used in modem terminology because theres only 2 wires, ground and signal.

I use Pipex,l I find them really good, I found it strange vecuase they use BT lines and when I checked the BT site they said they didn't cover my area for broadband however Pipex was the only company I found that said they covered my area. Also they came recommened to me, they are meant to have a really good support, mind I haven't needed to use it yet. Also my connection rarely gets cut off, my router keeps its connection for hundreds of hours at a time .

The latest issue of Which? magazine includes a poll on the best ISPs (based on user recommendation).

The following came out above average.

    clara.net (71%)
    waitrose.com (61%)
    plusnet (59%)
    pipex (53%)
    Demon (52%)
    Blueyonder (50%)
    One.tel (43%)

Bottom of the list were NTL, Wanadoo and supanet.

Not sure if all of the above provide broadband, but it at least gives you an idea.
